Golf team clinches third straight Conference Championship

HAMMOND – The Glenwood City varsity golf team was at Pheasant Hill Golf Course outside of Hammond on Thursday, May 22 for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet, which was won by the Hilltoppers for the third year in a row.

The Toppers swept the conference after winning eight straight meets in the regular season against the five other schools.

The five man varsity team consisting of seniors Nick Mrdutt and Jordan Hill, junior Jake Hierlmeier and sophomores Nathan Mrdutt and Garrett Schemionek finished the 18-hole meet with a score of 325.

The closest was the Mondovi team led by Hayden Ford, which scored a 344. St. Croix Central followed with a 362, then it was Spring Valley with a 365, Elk Mound had a 416 and Colfax finished last with a 456.

Pheasant Hills is a par 72 course and Nick and Jake executed the first nine-holes with perfection as they both shot a 36.

Nick finished with a 40 in the back nine to lead the team with a total of 76. Jake finished one stroke ahead of Nick with a 41 in the back nine for a total of 77.

Garrett and Nathan both tied with a first round of 44 and then a second of 42 for a total of 86. Hill rounded out the team with a 49 and a 48 for a 97 18-hole total.

Nick birdied the first two holes and then had pars on holes three through five before bogeying hole six. He finished with a par on hole seven, bogey on hole eight and par on hole nine.

On the back nine, he shot par on hole ten, then bogeyed 11 and par on 12 and 13. He double bogeyed hole 14 and bogeyed 15, but bounced pack and shot par on the final three holes.

Jake birdied the first hole as well and then was par on holes two and three and birdied hole four. He then double bogeyed hole five, but recovered by shooting par the last four holes.

In the back nine, he shot par on ten, bogeyed 11, was par on 12 and 13, bogeyed 14 and parred 15 before shooting three over on hole 16. He finished with a par on 17 and 18.

Garrett bogeyed hole one, shot par on hole two, double bogeyed three, bogeyed four and five, then shot par on six and double bogeyed seven and eight and then shot birdie on hole nine.

He finished the back nine with a par on ten and 11 then was three over on 12 and came back with par on 13, 14 and 15 before going two over on hole 16. He finished with par on 17 and a bogey on 18.

Nathan was par on one, double bogeyed two and three then was par on four, bogeyed five, parred six and seven, double bogeyed eight and was par on nine.

On the back nine, he bogeyed ten, was par on 11 and double bogeyed 12 before bogeyed 13 an 14. He then was par on 14 with four strokes taken. Then he bogeyed 16 and parred the last two holes.

Hill went three over on the first hole then bogeyed hole two and then shot par on hole three. He bogeyed four, was three over on five, bogeyed six, double bogeyed seven and was bogeyed on the eight and nine.

The last nine went double bogey on ten, bogey on 11 and 12, double bogey on 13 and 14, bogey on 15, par on 16, bogey on 17 and then he double bogeyed 18.

After the meet finished and the cards were scored up, it was revealed that the Toppers dominated the All-Conference standings for the first time in years as four out of five team members made the list.

Hierlmeier finished a top the conference with a total of 87 points. Hayden Ford followed in second with 84. Then it was Nick Mrdutt in third with 80, brother Nathan Mrdutt followed with 61 and Schemionek was fifth with 57.

Next was the Regional golf meet, which was Tuesday, May 27 at the Luck Golf Club. The Sectional Meet will be at the Lake Wissota Golf Course either the following Tuesday or Wednesday.
