11 honor students at Boyceville High School

BOYCEVILLE — The Boyceville High School class of 2014 has 11 honor students.

The students took time out of their busy schedules to answer a questionnaire from the Tribune Press Reporter to provide the following profiles.

The order is alphabetical and not in order of the class ranking.

Peter Duerst

Peter is the son of Steve and Diane Duerst.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. For me the most memorable event of high school during senior year, when Ian Kane and I won the state gold medal for Mission Possible for Science Olympiad. He and I put in hours upon hours of work into building the best device possible, and it was incredibly satisfying to see all of our work pay off at the state level.

List your favorite high school classes. My favorite high school classes were AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, Contemporary American History, AP Biology, and AP Physics. All of these classes were challenging for me, with incredibly interesting subjects covered. The science classes in particular helped me in deciding on what I am interested in majoring in after high school.

What activities were you involved in during high school? During high school, I was involved in Science Olympiad and Student Government, beginning my freshman year. Starting my sophomore year, I became involved with Cross Country and Drama Club. I stayed in all of these activities until the end of my senior year.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I will be working at Walmart, saving money. This fall I will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I currently intend to major in Mechanical Engineering or a more specific subset of that.

Kennedy Hellmann

Kennedy is the daughter of John and Bethany Hellmann.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. My most memorable event in high school would have to be the big games we won in sporting events and how exciting and loud the bus rides were. Also getting named a Youth Optimist was not only memorable, but also honorable.

List your favorite high school classes. My favorite high school classes were Sociology, Civics, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Physiology and Anatomy, and Child Development. All of these classes taught me things that I enjoyed learning about.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Volleyball (9, 10, 11, 12); Basketball (9, 10, 11, 12); Softball (9, 10, 11, 12); FBLA Member (9); FFA Member (9, 10, 11); FCCLA (11, 12); Academic Decathlon (11); Quiz Bowl (11); Science Olympiad (11, 12).

What are your plans after graduation? My plan is to attend St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota and major in Nursing. I will then pursue my nursing career to become a neonatal nurse.

Tanner Johnson-Hetchler

Tanner is the son of Vicky Johnson and Clint Hetchler.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. Competing in the 2013 Dunn-St. Croix Conference with my teammates; competing in three state meets (so far) for Cross Country/Track.

List your favorite high school classes. Contemporary American History – it was taught in a way that I immensely enjoyed; Civics – very enjoyable curriculum.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Track and field (11th and 12th); Quiz Bowl (12th); Cross Country (9th-12th); Baseball (9th-10th); Science Olympiad (11th-12th).

What are your plans after graduation? Working at a summer job in either Menomonie or Woodbury then attending the University of Minnesota for an undecided major and a possible minor in Spanish.

Elizabeth Koehler

Elizabeth is the daughter of Eugene and Lori Koehler.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. I will never forget all of the fun times we had in Mrs. Debee’s classes.

List your favorite high school classes. Math, because it is easy for me and it’s fun; Physiology and Anatomy, because I have learned so many new and interesting things; I also enjoyed all of Mrs. DeBee’s classes.

What activities were you involved in during high school? FCCLA (Freshman-Junior Year); Help our with the United Methodist Church Suppers (Freshman-Present); Obtained my C.N.A. (Junior).

What are your plans after graduation? In the fall I plan on attending UW-Eau Claire to major in Nursing.

April Lake

April is the daughter of Jeffrey and Kelley Lake.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. I have so many great memories from high school but some of the best came from my participation in high school athletics and in-class activities.

List your favorite high school classes. Engineering, Civics, A.P. Biology, Agriculture Orientation, and Physiology and Anatomy. I enjoyed these classes because they taught me important concepts that will be important in my future.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Girls Basketball 9-12th Grade; Girls Volleyball 9-12th Grade; Softball 9th Grade; Track and Field 10-11th Grade; Future Farmers of America (FFA) 9th-12th Grade; Science Olympiad 10th Grade; Coach fourth and fifth grade girls Youth Volleyball 11-12th Grade; Student Council 9th-12th Grade.

What are your plans after graduation? Next year, I want to attend Chippewa Valley Technical College and receive my degree in Agriscience Technology.

Emma Lorenz

Emma is the daughter of Wayne and Debbie Lorenz.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. The most memorable event that I have of high school was the first night of basketball my freshman year. It was our first water break and Kysa Franseen told me the last one in had to run sprints. I was terrified.

List your favorite high school classes. My favorite high school classes include Civics, Sociology, and Contemporary American History, because they are taught by Mr. Engel. He is a very knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches and makes learning fun.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Volleyball – 3 years, Basketball – 2 years, Student Council – 4 years, FFA – 4 years, Dance – 1 year, National Honor Society – 2 years, Science Olympiad – 2 years.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I will be working full time at Menomonie Family Restaurant and taking a CNA class. I will be attending CVTC in the fall of 2014 in the Nursing Associates Program, then transferring over to UW-EC to earn my BSN.

Danielle Nelson

Danielle is the daughter of Scott and Dawn Swanepoel and Darrell Nelson.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. I will never forget the thrill of pole vaulting during practice on a beautiful, warm day.

List your favorite high school classes. I loved Algebra, because I found math to be something that I enjoyed. I adored mostly every English class and art class, because I loved to think creatively. I liked Anatomy and Physiology because I enjoyed learning about the different body systems.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Fall Dance Team (2009-2010), Track and Field (2011-2014), Academic Decathalon (2011-2014), Quiz Bowl (2013-2014), Science Olympiad (2011-2014), Visual Arts Classic (2014), FFA (2011-2014), Yearbook Club (2013-2014).

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on going off to college this fall at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, MI. I’m hoping to major in Psychology.

Brittany Waller

Brittany is the daughter of Troy and Tammy Waller.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. The most memorable event that happened while I was in high school was when I participated in the Wisconsin Ambassadors of Music European Tour to London, Paris, Switzerland, Venice, Austria, and Germany.

List your favorite high school classes. During high school my favorite class was Accounting. Though at times Accounting became tedious, it allowed me to gain more understanding and experience for my future college classes and career.

What activities were you involved in during high school? During high school I was involved in the Boyceville High School Band. For three years in band, I participated in Marching band, Jazz band, Solo/Ensemble, and Wisconsin Ambassadors of Music.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I plan on working during the summer. While working I plan on going to Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in New Richmond and getting my Associates Degree in Accounting.

Nicholas Wathke

Nicholas is the son of Paul and Julie Wathke.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. Being part of the Boyceville Science Olympiad Team and medaling at the Wisconsin State Tournament each of my four years. I received two state runner-up finishes and was also a state champion.

List your favorite high school classes. Contemporary American History – Mr. Engel has a teaching style that keeps students involved and makes his classes enjoyable. AP Chemistry – Mr. Hamm approaches his curriculum with a different style. We do lots of  labs that teach us how to apply the things we have learned in class.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Boyceville Football (2010-2013); Boyceville FFA (2010-2011); Boyceville Baseball (2011-2014); Boyceville Science Olympiad (2010-2014); National Honor Society (2012-present).

What are your plans after graduation? During the summer I will be working with the Dunn County Highway Department, and in the fall I will be studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville.

Clayton Windsor

Clayton is the son of Ken Windsor and Sherry Windsor.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. Two trips to Ohio for Science Olympiad, Trip to Milwaukee for Science Olympiad, Football team going to the playoffs, wrestling team being conference champs, winning 6 state medals in Science Olympiad, walking out of the state Science Olympiad tournament my freshman year with a silver medal (.5 points behind 1st).

List your favorite high school classes. AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Contemporary American History. All classes that prepared me for college.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Football Team 2012-2013, 2013-2014 (Junior and Senior Years); Wrestling Team 2012-2013, 2013-2014 (Junior and Senior Years); Science Olympiad 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014 (Freshman-Senior years); Menomonie Alliance Youth Group 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2012-2013 (Freshman-Junior Years)

What are your plans after graduation? I will try to get a summer job so that I can make some money to pay for college at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, to work towards a pre-professional major in veterinary sciences, with a focus on biomedical sciences

Dylan Windsor

Dylan is the son of Christopher and Valerie Windsor.

List the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school. I recall my freshman year, when I and my cousin were new at Boyceville. I joined Science Olympiad and made it to the state tournament, competing in an event on alternative energy and energy dynamics, called Wind Power. My cousin and I finished together, half a point behind a Junior and Senior in High School and obtained the 2nd place medal.

List your favorite high school classes. AP Physics – it was interesting to learn the interrelations of the natural world on a macroscopic scale; Anatomy and Physiology – it was extremely applicable to everyday life. AP Chemistry – It explained many of the natural phenomena of the world; AP Calculus – just like AP Physics, it opened the door to understanding the natural world.

What activities were you involved in during high school? Science Olympiad 2010-2014; Wrestling 2011-2013; Football 2011-2013; Track & Field 2011-2012.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I plan to obtain a summer job, and attend the University of Wisconsin River Falls the following year. At UW-River Falls I intend to pursue a degree in Chemistry, Physics, and Math.
