Lady Bulldogs ten-run Cardinals at home

By Kelsie Hoitomt

BOYCEVILLE — The Lady Bulldogs pushed their record to 5-2 after beating the Spring Valley Cardinals at home last Friday, May 2.

The game ended after five innings when the ten-run rule went into affect due to the Bulldogs taking a lead of 14-4, which was the final score as well.

The Cardinals scored the first run of the game at the top of the first inning, but they quickly fell behind by three after the Bulldogs put Brooklynn Blaser, Lexi Peterson, Kennedy Hellmann and Kayla Nelson across home.

Jenna Beyrer started the second inning at bat and she drew a walk and eventually worked her way around the bases until she hit home.

Peterson again hit home plate after being walked for the second time as well. Hellmann then singled herself to first base following Peterson.

Nelson, Maddy Bygd and Madysn Riek were then each walked, which help to push Hellmann home before they got their third out.

The Cardinals had their best inning in the third with three runs scored, which temporarily put the gap in the score to just three runs, 7-4.

However, the Lady Bulldogs answered back once again and posted three runs of their own from Breyer, Blaser and Nelson.

The Bulldogs sealed the deal in the bottom of the fourth inning with four final runs scored by Blaser, Peterson, Nelson and Katie Kegen who ran as flex for Marki Lagerstrom.

Hellmann allowed just four Cardinal batters to step up to the plate in the fourth and fifth innings and the defense took care of the rest.

Hellmann was the winning pitcher with the four runs allowed on seven hits. She had two walks and two strikeouts as well.

Alison VonHaden was the losing pitcher for the Cardinals. She allowed nine walks and seven runs. Katy Schreiber was her relief and she allowed the other seven runs as well as seven walks.

Blaser, Peterson and Hellmann led the team with three runs each; Hellmann also led the team in RBIs with three. Nelson and Breyer followed with two runs and Kegen had one.

The Bulldogs played again on Tuesday (May 6) with a road game in Hammond against St. Croix Central. Next, they will be in Colfax on Thursday and then they will be back at home on Friday to host Pepin/Alma.
