GLENWOOD CITY – The Glenwood City golf team has finally hit the links and started knocking the rust off their clubs now that the sunshine has melted the snow off the greens at the Glen Hills Golf Course.
The Hilltopper team is heading into the 2014 season with two consecutive Dunn-St. Croix Conference titles under their belts.
Last year the Toppers also placed second at the Regional and Sectional meets and then advanced to the state tournament as a team for only the second time in the school history.
Of that group last year, the Toppers lost six to graduation including Michael Johnson, Alex Little, Tyler Nueske, Elizabeth Nyhus, Jaden Newton and Zach Schemionek.
Despite the loss in the numbers, the Topper team is sitting just fine as back from the state qualifying team are Nick Mrdutt, Jake Hierlmeier, Nathan Mrdutt and Garrett Schemionek.
Both Nick and Jake led the team on the links and have been conference medalist honorees for the past two years. Their experience and leadership will be a big asset this season as a handful of newcomers work their way to the varsity squad.
Looking to fight for a spot on varsity according to coach Ron Johnson are newcomers and previous junior varsity players; Jordan Hill, Bill Norenberg, Brandon Barstad, Matt Wink, Nathan Hill, Jake O’Meara and Ray Arons.
Coach Johnson has been with the team for five years and been the head coach for four seasons now.
He shared that the team’s strengths including having four players returning from the varsity squad, but a lack in experience overall in the roster looks to be a weakness for the first time in a few years.
“Our goals are simple. We try to get better with each week, we try to develop skills that make the game enjoyable and hope they will carry over into our conference meets, regionals, sectionals and state tournament,” said Johnson.
The Toppers are scheduled to have their first meet of the season this Friday at home, but the location may change to another conference location depending on the condition of the course.
The next meet following that is set for Tuesday, April 15 at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax at 4:30 p.m.
