McAbee-Thomas breaks school record in Triple Jump

By Kelsie Hoitomt

MENOMONIE – The Boyceville track and field team was back at the UW-Stout complex this past Saturday, March 29 for the Northern Badger Classic inside the Johnson Field House.

Bulldog athlete, Logan McAbee-Thomas had quite the day as he broke the Boyceville school record after jumping 43 feet and two inches in the triple jump.

Logan himself was the previous record holder. Despite having only one previous track meet under his shoes this season, Logan blew past the competition as he out jumped the rest of the field by three feet and beyond.

Also having a solid day of competition on the boys’ team was Tanner Johnson-Hetchler. He placed third out of 30 runners in the 3200m with a time of 10:50.03, which was a personal best time by 21 seconds.

Tanner also had a good run in the mile as he placed fifth with a time of 5:00.34, roughly 14 seconds behind first place.

Finishing strong for the girls’ team was Abbey Bird who placed third in the mile with a time of 5:58.15. She also competed in the shot put and placed sixth against 40 others.

“Abbey has a unique set of skills that would make her a good college multi-event athlete. Not many can place in the mile and the shot put, it is two completely different strengths,” shared coach Corey Day.

Coach Day also praised Cassie Malean for her seventh place finish in the high jump with a 4’ 6” against 24 other participants, which is an impressive placement for a freshman.

Also placing in the top ten for the girls’ team was Sandra Knorr in ninth in the triple jump with a 28’ 9.25”. For the boys’ team it was Ian Kane who placed tenth in the 400m with a time of 57.10.

The Lady Bulldogs finished in 16th place with a total of ten team points against 24 other schools. Arcadia was in first place with 84 points.

As for the boys, they finished 12th with a total of 20 team points; Chetek/Weyerhaeuser was first with 68 points.
