BOYCEVILLE – The Bulldogs’ track and field team is looking like a solid group as they have had a handful of stand-out individual performances with just two meets completed so far this season.
There is a good amount of depth on the boys’ team with five seniors leading the group followed by five juniors, four sophomores and five new freshmen.
Logan McAbee-Thomas is back as a previous state qualifier and school record holder in the triple jump.
Also qualifying at the state level on a relay team and returning this year are Tanner Johnson-Hetchler, Ian Kane, Mitch Pustol, Bryor Hellmann, Ian Fontaine and Buddy Hanestad.
As for the girls’ team, Danielle Nelson is the lone senior on the squad. She just missed her mark at the sectional last season and is determined more than ever to make it to state this time around.
Her senior leadership will help oversee and guide the group of three juniors, seven sophomores and six freshmen.
This group of 36 athletes looks to fill some big shoes as the team lost a handful of previous state participants as Zach Klassen, Dominic Olson, Will Kraft, Isaac Boyd, Tyler Wolfe, Katelyn Merten and Alex Wold are gone to graduation.
“Our goal is to get better every day. If we can do that no matter where we finish, it is a successful season. I believe if we keep improving we will qualify athletes to the state level,” said coach Corey Day.
“Our strength is in our individual talents and our weakness is in our experience and in our numbers. We have some young talent on both the boys and girls side. We will need to make some quick gains to compete with upperclassmen.”
Day stated that their “young talent” with potential are freshmen Tyler Krueger, Brandon Malean, Cassie Malean, Carlee Schultz and Erica Sempf as well as sophomores Brandon Windsor and Wyatt Swenson.
Corey Day and Joan Klassen are the returning coaches for the Bulldogs. Day enters his seventh year with the team and Klassen is going into her 19th.
Day and Klassen have coached the Bulldogs through two meets so far this season. The team will be back in competition on Thursday, April 10 with an invitational at St. Croix Central and then again on April 15 at the Baldwin-Woodville complex.
