BOYCEVILLE – There is no lack in numbers on the Boyceville softball roster as seven new freshmen take to the team, led by seniors Kennedy Hellmann and Melissa Stuart.
Hellmann was awarded Honorable Mention last season for her status on the pitching mound and she also held one of the top batting averages with a .359. Stuart as the fellow senior, returns as an experienced outfielder and utility player.
Also returning to the team with experience under their cleats and athletic letters in their hands are juniors Rachal Anderson, Alexa Peterson, Brooke Blaser, Kendall Wold and Kayla Nelson, who was out due to a previous ACL injury.
Sophomores Katie Kegen, Maddy Bygd, Mckenzie Schultz, Jenna Beyrer, Marki Lagerstrom and Peyton Hellmann are also back on the roster.
Filling out the rest of the roster are freshmen Erica Sempf, Maddy Riek, Brooklyn Hellmann, Tori Kostman, Kayla Hoff, Morgan Kuhn and Abi Erikson. Junior Jada Christianson also joins the team.
“We have some depth in a number of positions including pitching,” explained coach Jamie Olson of their strengths and weaknesses. “We are still a very young team, but have a considerable amount of varsity experience in 7-9 varsity spots.”
“This depth is going to create competition, which will lead to hard work and commitment. Our team unity and attitude will make a big difference in our overall play and success. We need to continue to be a stronger and faster team and so far our girls have committed to doing that.”
Jamie Olson is going into his fifth year as head coach of the Bulldogs. He is assisted this year by Michael Roemhild and John Hellmann.
As a team, the Bulldogs’ goals are to compete at a high level every night and put themselves in a position to win close games.
“I feel this conference race is wide open and the teams that can pull out the close games will have a chance to win it,” Olson said.
In that conference race, the Bulldogs believe their top competitors this 2014 season will be to Pepin/Alma, Elmwood/Plum City and Colfax.
The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to start their season on Monday, April 7 with a game in Alma and then another at home the following day; weather permitting.
