ST. CROIX FALLS — The Boyceville wrestling team competed in the St. Croix Falls Wrestling Classic last Saturday, January 25 and placed third out of 17 teams with two individual wrestlers finishing as champions in their weight class.
The team itself was third with 153 points and in second was Amery with 171 points and first went to Hudson with 215 points.
James Palmer, Boyceville’s 113 pounder, was the first to earn the champion status for the Bulldogs after he beat Austen Conner of Amery by a fall in 4:59
Palmer won his first two matches by fall and then won by a tech fall of 17-2 in the semi-final round against Mitch Fanning of Hudson.
Also in first place was freshman grappler, Micah Johnson at 138 pounds. Johnson won by a fall his first match and then by a tech fall to be put into the semi-final round.
In the semis he won by a major decision of 13-1 over Dylan Auren of Princeton, MN. Then in the championship round he won by another major decision of 14-6 over Zack Radkey-Pechacek of River Falls.
Junior lightweight wrestler, Austin Wolfe, was the only Bulldog to place second. He started off with a bye in his first match at 106 pounds. He then won by a fall over Drew Klabon of Hudson and then by a decision of 8-3 over Matrix Jisko of Wisconsin Rapids.
In the championship round, he was knocked off the first place podium after he lost to Andrew Smith of Amery by a major decision of 10-0.
There was also just one individual who placed fourth on the team and that was Brock Swenson at 120 pounds. He had a bye his first match and then lost to Beau Hunter of Pine City, MN by a fall in 3:24.
Lastly, he dropped down into the third place match and lost to Matt Koski of Hudson by a decision of 8-3.
There were two Bulldogs that finished in fifth place; James Lindo at 132 pounds and Logan McAbee-Thomas at 170.
Lindo won his first match by a fall in 3:27 against Devon Doorn of Cameron, but was beat by a tech fall. He wrestled his way back through the consolation round where he won by a decision of 6-3 over Mike Bliskowski of Chisago Lakes, MN.
Next up was Jonathan Nelson of Northwestern and Lindo beat him on a 12-6 decision to fall into the fifth place match. Lindo finished the tournament with a pin in 2:25 over Dylan Schubert of Spencer.
McAbee-Thomas started his day off with a pin over Jared Santana of Cameron in 3:22. He then lost to Billy McClay of Princeton and was sent to wrestle back against Jackson Doller of Northwestern, which he won by a fall.
After that match he faced off against Nathan Fuller of Wisconsin Rapids and won by another fall, which put him in the final fifth place contest. He beat Joe Lundgren by a fall in 1:40 to take fifth.
Finishing in sixth place were Jon Harnisch at 152 pounds and Bryor Hellmann at 160.
Harnisch won his first match on a short decision of 6-4 over Nic Johnson of Hudson. He then lost to Bennett Paulson of Amery on a 9-4 decision.
Harnisch was then sent to wrestle CJ Haasnoot and he won by a fall in 2:05, which advanced him to the fifth place match. It was there that Jon had to again wrestle Johnson, but this time he lost on another short decision of 4-2.
As for Hellmann, he started the day off with a major decision win of 12-0 over Mike Sampson of Chisago Lakes. He was then beat by Jake Pramann of Princeton by a nailbiting decision of 8-7.
He then pinned Hunter Hildebrandt of Spencer to advance to the fifth place match. He lost to Winston Bystrom of River Falls by an 8-5 decision to place sixth.
Also placing for the team was Tyler Stroo in eighth place at 126 pounds and Alex Lovett in eighth place as well at 182.
Stroo started off with a bye and then was beat by Joe Gates of Amery on a 3-0 decision. He then received another bye and was then beat by Max Benitz of Wisconsin Rapids by a 4-3 decision.
He was then sent into the seventh place match where he lost to Jamison Pflug of Northwestern by a fall in 45 seconds.
As for Lovett, he started with a pin against Nathan Moen of Chetek/Prairie Farm/Weyerhauser. He then lost to senior grappler, Sebastian Larson of River Falls by a tech fall of 20-4.
He then received a bye and was next pinned by Trent Goplin of Hudson. In the seventh place match, he lost on a short decision of 2-0 to Zach Schneider of Spencer.
And lastly, wrestling for the Bulldogs, but not placing was Wyatt Hansen at 145 pounds and Jake Erickson at 195.
Hansen won his first match over Gabe Kolhoff and then beat Zach Mattson by a pin. His last match was a loss to Dan Horn of St. Croix Falls by a fall.
As for Erickson, he won his first match over Eli Newton and then received a bye before being beat by Matthew Williamson by a major decision of 12-1.
Next on the schedule for the Bulldogs is a triangular at the Rice Lake High School this Saturday, February 1. The Bulldogs will wrestle against Rice Lake and Elgin, Illinois with the contest starting at 11:00 a.m.
They will have a short break and be back in action on Tuesday, February 4 with a dual in Glenwood City starting at 7:00 p.m.
