HUDSON – The Boyceville wrestlers were in Hudson last Saturday for a six team invitational. The Bulldogs finished 2-2 on the day after wrestling teams from Hudson, Stillwater, Ellsworth and Harding, MN.
The first dual was against Harding, which ended in the Bulldogs favor with a 51-26 final.
The first match ended in a pin in 1:01 with Micah Johnson beating Andrew Borgstrom at the 138 pound weight class.
The 145 pound match was a three period battle that ended in Jon Harnisch’s favor after he finally got the pin over Nordoryei Daye in 4:16.
Three points were added to the score at the 152 pound match after Wyatt Hansen won by a decision of 7-0 over Logan Lange.
Bryor Hellmann then got the team’s third pin after he took down Jordan Zukauska in 46 seconds, which put the Bulldogs ahead 21-0.
The team score continued to increase after Logan McAbee-Thomas pinned Ryan Seppi in 1:01 and then Alex Lovett won by a forfeit, which then put the score at 33-0.
Harding would score its first points of the match after Tyler Draeger lost to Jake Johnson on a 13-3 decision.
At 220 pounds, Jake Erickson lost on a decision as well of 11-0. Then the Bulldogs forfeited at heavy weight, which put the score at 33-14.
The Bulldogs increased their lead at lightweight when Austin Wolfe pinned Dylan Vang in 106 after he got a take down and two near falls on him.
James Palmer finished with a similar match against Kevin Yang. He had a take down and two near falls and then finished with the pin in 1:20.
At 120 pounds was Brock Swenson who faced off against Keinnan Thacker and lost after getting pinned in the first period, which jumped up Harding’s score to 45-20.
Brandon Hawkinson was pinned as well by Jet Ka, but the dual ended on a positive note after James Lindo pinned Chris Bonilla in the 132 pound match.
Loss to Hudson
The following dual was against the Hudson Raiders, a team ranked 11th in Division 1. The roles reversed and the Bulldogs were beat 55-21.
The first match was at 145 with Harnisch losing to Sawyer Massie on a 6-2 decision. Hansen was next against Cal Johnson, which ended in a loss as well, 11-2.
The Bulldogs got their first points after Hellmann beat Nic Johnson on a decision of 9-5.
With the score at 7-3, the Bulldogs went down further by six points after McAbee-Thomas was pinned by Dylan Anderson in the second period.
Lovett put some momentum back into the team after he pinned Trent Goplin in the second period.
With the Bulldogs down by just four points, Hudson went on a tear and quickly changed the score to 31-9 after Draeger and Erickson were pinned and then another forfeit at 285 was counted.
The score jumped to 31-15 after Wolfe went two periods with Drew Klabon before pinning him in the third.
Palmer, Swenson, Hawkinson and Lindo each lost, which jacked up Hudson’s score to 55 team points. The final match ended in a win for the Bulldogs after Johnson pinned C.J. Steiner in the second period.
Second win of the day
The third dual of the day was the Bulldogs’ second and final win as a team. They wrestled against the Ellsworth JV squad and won 51-30.
Starting things off was Hansen at 152 pounds against Max Kuehn. The match went the full length with Hansen winning by a decision of 9-5.
Continuing the winning streak was Hellmann who pinned Rhett Borth near the end of the match in 5:59. McAbee-Thomas followed with a pin in 53 seconds and Lovett was next with a pin in 4:49.
The Bulldogs were delivering a shutout until Alex Donnelly pinned Draeger at the 195 pound match to put the score at 21-6.
The Bulldogs then shifted their roster and forfeited at 220 pounds so Erickson could bump up to heavyweight. Erickson lost to Mike Freand by fall late in the third period.
The Bulldogs then won three straight matches with Wolfe starting things off by pinning Derek Koller in 45 seconds. Then Palmer followed with a pin over Andrew Swanson in 2:48 and Swenson got a pin in 5:15 to put the score at 39-18.
Hawkinson lost his match at 126 pounds after being pinned by Adam Walter. Lindo then received a forfeit at 132, but forfeited themselves at 138.
The dual ended with Harnisch beating Jacab Fuchs in the third period.
Final team loss
The last team to face off against the Bulldogs was the Stillwater Ponies, who won on a fairly close dual of 42-30.
Hellmann was first up at 160 pounds and he started things off on the right foot after he beat Colin Olson on a 6-2 decision.
The Bulldogs were down and out after that as they lost five matches in a row. McAbee-Thomas was pinned, Lovett lost on a 1-0 decision, Draeger was pinned, Erickson was pinned and the team received a forfeit at 285 pounds.
Wolfe then won his fourth match of the day and gave the team six more points after he pinned his opponent at 1:28.
The score then jumped to 27-15 when Palmer got a fall in the second period after getting an escape and then a reversal before the win. Swenson then followed with a pin in 14 seconds.
The Ponies road away with the win after Hawkinson and Dylan Lamm were pinned and Lindo lost on a 10-5 decision.
The dual ended with Harnisch winning on a 4-2 decision and then Hansen got a pin late in the match.
The Bulldogs were in Ladysmith for a dual on Tuesday (Jan. 14). They will be back in action this Thursday (Jan. 16) to take on the Spring Valley/Elmwood team at home starting at 7:00 p.m.
