ELMWOOD – The Glenwood City girls basketball team traveled to Elmwood Thursday, December 19 to play against the currently undefeated Raiders. The Toppers beat the Raiders by just over 30 points in a 57-26 final.
The Toppers took a seven point lead of 9-2 in the first quarter after Moriah Kuehndorf drained a basket, two freethrows and then a triple. Rachel Klatt also put down a shot early in the quarter.
The Toppers played one of their best quarters so far this season in the second with a total of 23 points scored against the Raiders.
The Lady Toppers were on fire from inside with eight doubles drained including four for eight points from Jennifer Kopacz. Kuehndorf had two baskets and Klatt had another one as well.
Maya Petersen also scored a double and had two freethrow shots. Kristie Knops scored five out of six freethrows as well to give the Toppers a 32-17 lead at the half.
The momentum carried over into the third quarter as the Toppers continued their aggressive game from under the net.
The Toppers posted 18 points from three additional baskets by Kopacz, two from Morgan Kadinger and Megan Samens and one from Kayla Bloss and Kuehndorf as well.
The defense remained wide awake and engaged in the second half as well as they allowed the Raiders to score just five points in the third quarter and four in the fourth.
The Toppers finished the game with seven points scored in the final eight minutes from three doubles and a freethrow.
Senior, Jen Kopacz led the team in points with 14 from seven doubles. Following was Kuehndorf with 13 points from four doubles, one triple and two free-throws.
Then it was Samens, Klatt and Petersen who each had six points, Knops had five, Kadinger had four, Bloss had two and Gabby Peterson had one.
Next on the schedule for the Hilltoppers is their annual Holiday Tournament. Their first game is set to start at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 27 and their last game that evening will be at 8:00 p.m.
They will resume play the following day with their first game starting at 6:00 p.m.
