BOYCEVILLE — Boyceville wrestling will be reloading for yet another run at a conference title and possibly more this season.
When the Bulldogs hit the mat this week to open the 2013-14 wrestling slate, the roster will feature 17 returning letterwinners among the 27-member squad.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 15-6 overall record and a 3-1 conference record in 2012-13 which earned them their 17th Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship, a title it shared with Spring Valley/Elmwood.
The team lost four seniors including Josh Cormican, who was a state runner-up and Dominic Olson, who was a state qualifier. Both wrestlers were 40-match winners and had scored over 200 team points in their high school careers.
But the team is still stocked with plenty of varsity experience headlined by Austin Wolfe and Bryor Hellmann, who were both state qualifiers a year ago.
The list of experienced wrestlers also includes Wyatt Hansen, who had 28 wins last year; James Lindo, a 23-match winner; Sawyer Swenson, who had 21 wins; Jake Lake with 20 wins; Jon Harnisch finished with 19 wins; Logan McAbee-Thomas had 16 wins and Dylan Lamm picked up 14 wins.
Those wrestlers help to make up a roster of six seniors, sevenjuniors, five sophomores and nine freshmen.
“We will have a nice mix of underclassmen, along with our seven seniors. The freshmen and sophomores are hungry and will push the juniors and seniors for spots, which creates competition in the room and will make us better in the end,” explained head coach Jamie Olson.
Despite the large roster, the team is still a bit light in numbers in their upper weight classes from 182-285 pounds with roughly six athletes out of 30 that could potentially fill those places.
“Our strengths are in our lower and middle weights, but our weakness is our experience in the upper weights. However, this team has put in a great amount of time in the off season and are excited about competing at a high level,” said coach Olson.
Jamie Olson enters his 15th season as Boyceville’s head wrestling coach and will be assisted by Corey Day for a seventh straight season as well as volunteer assistants Paul Greene and Doug Palmer.
Coach Olson shared that the team’s goal is to compete at a high level in practice and during competition.
“If we do this, our goals will be met,” said coach. “ We take it one day at a time and focus on improving in all areas of wrestling. Our kids have set high goals and they are determined to get after it and achieve them. I’m excited about the year to come.”
The Bulldogs started their season with a home dual match against Chetek-Weyerhaeuser on Tuesday, December 1. They will be in Ellsworth for a tournament on Saturday, December 7 and back on the road the following Saturday, December 14 to compete in the Wisconsin Dells Duals held at Chula Vista Resort.
Their next scheduled home match is not until Thursday, January 16 against Spring Valley/Elmwood starting at 7:00 p.m.
