22 athletes fill roster on GC wrestling team

By Kelsie Hoitomt

GLENWOOD CITY – Despite having a lack in numbers of participants, the Glenwood City wrestling team still looks to have potential for the 2013-14 season.

The team sent three seniors to the state level last season including Riley Knops, Adam Holmquist and Austin Moe, but the three hammers have since graduated.

This leaves senior, Isaac Tuttle as the lone member on the team who has had a taste of going to state as he was a qualifier last year. He also received a Second Team All-Conference honor and looks to have great leadership skills this season with his experience.

Also returning to the team as Second Team All-Conference recipients are seniors Jeff Kopacz and Blayze Wood.

Tuttle, Kopacz and Wood are a part of a core group of senior athletes along side Brennan Kessler, Jacob Carlson, Donovan Fornal, Hunter Chouinard,  Skylar Peterson and Clarence Rogers with several years of experience.

“We have some solid seniors. I believe there are seven kids who could win 20 plus matches on this team,” said coach Shane Strong.

This class of athletes has been a part of a winning dual-team for four straight years since the 2009-10 season, which has an overall record of 62-27.

With that in mind, their goal as a team this year remains the same.

“We want to train and compete with great attitude and great effort. Focus on improving every day in practice and in competition. Our success is measured on each individual reaching their full potential, whatever that may be,” said Strong.

Their efforts will be tested against conference contenders, Spring Valley and Boyceville this season.

“Spring Valley has a very strong sophomore class and some very good seniors. They return most of their team from last year and are the favorites for sure,” Strong explained. “Boyceville may have the best group of freshmen I’ve seen since the Hammers here in 2010.”

The Toppers open the season with the annual John Timm Tournament in the Glenwood City high school gymnasium this Saturday, December 7 at 10:00 a.m.

Next on the schedule is a home dual against Luck on Tuesday, December 10 starting at 7:00 p.m.
