GLENWOOD CITY – Last year the Glenwood City girls’ basketball team finished with a winning record (12-11) for the first time in seven years and they are determined to follow a similar pattern for the 2013-14 season.
The Lady Toppers return eight letter winners to the team this season: Kayla Bloss, Kristie Knops, Kayla Hanson, Jennifer Kopacz, Moriah Kuehndorf, Megan Samens, Morgan Kadinger and Rachel Klatt.
Kopacz led the team in points-per-game (ppg) last year as a sophomore with an average of 9.7. Behind her was Kuehndorf with a 7.4 ppg. Both players are aggressive in the zone for two-point shots, but can shoot accurately from the three-point line as well, which looks to be a contributing factor this season also.
Klatt returns as the team’s number two rebounder from last season as a freshman with a 3.4 game average. In the number one spot was Janessa Ullom who is gone to graduation.
Ullom along with five other players are gone to graduation, but this year Bloss along with fellow senior Katelyn Meyers look to lead the team of 25 girls on the court.
“Good chemistry and a solid work ethic will benefit us this year. We will have a fairly deep team, although many of the girls will be seeing their first substantial amount of varsity experience,” said head coach Justin Kuehndorf of his team.
This is Kuehndorf’s fourth year as head coach of the girls’ varsity team with assistance from Bruce Kelm. Their goal this year is to improve their winning record even further from last season and climb up the conference standing as well.
Their toughest conference contender looks to be Colfax as they return the majority of their players that were a part of the state runner-up team. Mondovi was one game short of reaching the state level and they will be strong competition this year as well.
The Hilltoppers will start the season off with a road game in Plum City on Tuesday, November 26. They will then host the number eight ranked team in the state, the Cameron Comets, on Tuesday, December 3 with both games starting at 7:30 p.m.
