Lady Toppers fall short to Blue Devils in last conference match

By Kelsie Hoitomt

GLENWOOD CITY – The Glenwood City volleyball team played their final game of the regular conference season last Tuesday night as they hosted the Plum City Blue Devils and lost in three sets of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-13.

The first game had the Blue Devils only ahead by two points throughout the beginning until they broke away with a 6-10 lead and then eventually a 10-22 lead before they reached the final.

The Toppers struggled to make a first pass to the setter, which caused them to either scramble to get the ball over the net or go into a free play instead of an attack attempt.

The second game saw the same pattern with the poor passes, which let the Blue Devils jump to an early lead of 2-8 and 7-17 midway through the set.

Despite the loss, there were more kills from the Hilltoppers with one each from Kelly Perkins, Kayla Bloss and Mikaela Voeltz.

The third game was headed in the right direction for the Lady Toppers after the Blue Devils had several errors, which allowed for a 7-2 lead in Glenwood City’s favor.

The Toppers continued their lead through a 10-7 score, but brutal kills from Plum City’s Sarah Gilles put the Blue Devils ahead for their first lead of 11-10, which quickly escalated to 11-19 and then 13-21 before the final.

Posting points for the Toppers were Bloss who had one kill and the team’s only service ace, Megan Samens had three kills and Perkins and Voeltz had one.

The Hilltoppers finished their season in Dunn-St. Croix Conference with a record of 0-9, which landed them a number eight seed in the first round of Regional play. They played Webster, the number one seed, in Webster on Tuesday, October 22.

The winner of that match will go on to play the winner of the Boyceville/Unity match on Thursday, October 24.
