OSCEOLA – The Glenwood City cross country team had one race this past week with an invitational at the Osceola High School. The varsity girls’ team brought home a trophy after finishing in second place. The boys finished in last place, but were still able to put a full team together.

Out of 120 participants in the girls’ 4k, it was freshman Taylor Drinkman who placed first for the Hilltoppers with a time of 17:24, which landed her in fifth place overall.

Pushing Drinkman through the finish line just three-tenths of a second behind was fellow teammate Morgan Kadinger who ran a 17:27 for sixth place.

Less than a minute behind, also finishing in the top ten was junior Jennifer Kopacz who ran a 18:11 for ninth place. She has been hampered by ankle issues throughout the season, but was finally able to persevere and make it as a top five runner for the Hilltoppers.

Scoring points for the Hilltoppers in the final two positions was Jenny Lindquist in 11th place (18:17) and Kaitlin Konder in 14th (18:32).

Also running the course not far from each other was Jenna Magsam in 16th place (18:38) and Macie Rasmussen in 18th (18:50).

In the 5k for the boys’ small school race there were seven schools that competed and the Hilltoppers finished seventh.

Jack Kremer was the number one runner for the Hilltoppers with a time of 20:21 for 23rd place out of 149 participants.

He was followed by the team’s only senior, Derick Huebner who placed 34th with a time of 21:20.

Finishing in a close group were the final three runners for the Toppers with Andrew Bauman in 41st (22:09), Cody Huebner in 43rd (23:05) and Corey Klatt in 44th (23:27).

The cross country teams competed in Barron on Tuesday (Sept 24). This will be their only invitational of the week and then they will hit the course in Ellsworth next Tuesday, October 1 at 4:00 p.m.
