GLENWOOD CITY – The Glenwood City Cross Country crew looks strong on the forefront for the girls’ team this season with 11 students participating; however just five boys make up the high school boys’ team this year.
Returning for the girls’ team are seniors Jenna Magsam and Jenny Lindquist who were each top three runners at times throughout last season.
Also back with a couple years of experience under their shoes are juniors, Kaitlin Konder, Jennifer Kopacz and Hannah Steinberger. Konder is a two-time, 2nd team All-Conference runner that looks to be even stronger this season.
Coming back this season as sophomores are Morgan Kadinger, Maya Petersen, Macie Rasmussen and Ashley Holmquist.
Kadinger was the number one runner for the team and she usually scored in the top 15 at meets, however some health issues sidelined her at the end of the season so she looks to make a strong comeback this year.
Rounding out the rest of the girls’ team are newcomers this season, Moriah Kuehndorf and Taylor Drinkman.
“Drinkman is our only high school freshman girl who will more than likely be one of the five varsity scorers. As a competitor through middle school, she was always towards the front of the pack,” said head coach Matt Schutz.
Two other freshmen are on the cross country team as well: Corey Klatt and Cody Huebner. Those two along with sophomores Jack Kremer and Andrew Bauman and senior Derick Huebner will make up the varsity team this season.
The boys team was previously led by Ethan Brandt and Tyler Johnson who are gone to graduation this year. Huebner and Kremer will look to lead the team now as they were the number four and five scorers last season and Bauman rounded out in the top seven as well.
“They will need to learn self-discipline or observe the girls for them to become leaders and truly get themselves and the team to that competitive state. They will need to learn a lot about themselves and their teammates after each meet,” said Schutz.
As an entire team, Schutz said their goal this season is be physically and mentally fit runners who will believe in the possibilities that will lie ahead of them as well as follow the program on and off the course in order to be contenders at conference and sectionals.
According to Schutz, Spring Valley and Colfax look to be tough contenders in the conference this season for the girls with the Cardinals having won the conference and the Division 3 state title last season. For the boys, it looks like Elk Mound and St. Croix Central will be strong competition.
This will be the seventh year that Schutz has been a part of the cross country team and his fourth year as head coach. Dave Stephen also returns for his fourth year as the assistant coach.
The Toppers will compete in their first invitational of the 2013 season this Thursday, August 29 in Boyceville starting at 3:00 p.m.
