The Democratic members of the Joint Finance Committee on may 27 called for a $275 per-pupil increase for public schools and elimination of funding for private school voucher expansion, using the millions earmarked for unaccountable vouchers instead to protect property taxpayers.
The following statement can be attributed to Mary Bell, a Wisconsin teacher serving as the president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council:
“Reinvesting in public schools and protecting taxpayers, instead of sending millions more state funds to unaccountable private schools, is definitely the way to go. Communities are beginning to understand the devastating impact the governor’s proposed budget would have locally – with zero increase for public school students and $1,400 increase per pupil for those in private voucher schools. These legislators know that Wisconsin can and must do better for our children.”
