GC baseball ends season in Alma

By Kelsie Hoitomt

ALMA — After winning a Level 1 Regional game for the first time since 2003, the Hilltopper baseball team ended their season to the Pepin/Alma Eagles after a 8-1 loss.

Seniors Mitchell Junker and Kyle Peterson played their final game on the mound with Junker pitching the first four innings and Peterson coming in as relief in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

The Eagles were hot on the bat with five unanswered runs scored in the first inning and their final three crossed the plate in the third.

The Toppers put their only runner across home plate in the third inning after Matt Tone drew a walk and then advanced around the bases after Adam Holmquist and Mitch Hurtgen were at bat.

Despite only having one run, the Toppers did have five hits; two from Junker and one from Richard Croes, Nick Peterson and Tone.

Junker and Kyle Peterson ended their high school sports careers on a high note as they each earned the First Team All-Conference honor for their efforts on the mound and in the batters box.

Holmquist also ended his senior season positively as he received Second Team All-Conference along with juniors Jake Carlson and Jeff Kopacz.
