Glenwood City’s 2013 graduates awarded $186,525 in scholarships

GLENWOOD CITY – Several graduates of Glenwood City’s Class of 2013 will share in a scholarship haul that once again tallied in the six figures.

More than half of this year’s graduating class of 44 members earned scholarship awards from private, public, and local courses. This year’s award total was up over $70,000 from 2012 as 23 individuals earned a combined tally of $186,525 in monetary awards.

More than half of that total was earned by one graduate – Honor student Margery Jordheim. It was announced at commencement exercises Saturday morning, May 18 that Jordheim had received eight different scholarships that totaled a whopping $102,400. The largest amounts came from her chosen school, St. Catherine’s University, which awarded her a $20,000 Presidential Scholarship and a  $5,000 Virtue Scholarship. Both are scholarships are renewable yearly for up to four years. She also received a $1,000 Russell Meyer Scholarship, a $500 Mayo Health System-Red Cedar Medical Center Scholarship, a pair of $250 awards from Glenhaven and the George Johnston Memorial Scholarships, a $300 Dorothy Kuhn Memorial Scholarship, and a $100 Ridgerunner Snowmobile Club Scholarship.

Another honor student, Matthew Tone, earned the class’ second largest award amount. Tone secured four awards for a total of $29,500. A four-year, $7,000 per year Regents Scholarship from Concordia University in St. Paul, MN was the largest. He also was chosen for a $1,000 Russell Meyer Scholarship.

Class valedictorian Kaylin Spaeth earned a sizable sum as well, collecting $15,050 from ten awards. The largest, the State of Wisconsin’s Academic Excellence Scholarship, is valued at $2,250 per year for four years.

Ashley Burns, another of the class’s honor students, earned $8000 in scholarships awards. The largest of the five awards was the four year, $1,500 per year Academic Scholarship from St. Cloud State University.

The Russell Meyer Scholarship fund awarded 11 scholarships this year, each valued at $1,000.
