GC softballers win first game against SCC

By Kelsie Hoitomt

GLENWOOD CITY — The Glenwood City softball team hosted the St. Croix Central Panthers for a double-header last Tuesday, April 30. The Toppers won the first game 5-4 and lost the second game 1-0.

It was a slow first few innings in the first game with the Toppers scoring one run from Kenzie Kruse after Kelly Perkins hit an RBI single to left field. The score would remain 1-0 until the fifth and final inning when each team had four runners cross the plate.

Kruse was the first to bat for the Toppers and made it to first base after a 1-1 count from SCC pitcher Abby Harrington. Megan Samens then followed suit. With two runners on base, Perkins crushed another one to left field to bring in both runners. Mikaela Voeltz then hit one to right/center field, which pushed in Perkins. Leslie Ludtke was the last at bat and with a hit to the outfield, Voeltz would advance to home for the fourth and final run.

The Panthers scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning and then their last three runs after a Hilltopper error, a walk and a two-base hit.

Despite playing an errorless second game, the Toppers were still unable to get a runner across the plate and lost 1-0. Samens had two hits and Perkins and Voeltz each had one, but neither were able to advance to home.

The Panthers scored their only run in the third inning after Marissa Arthur hit one to left field for a base double and then advanced to home after a hit by Ella Scott.

Perkins led the team at the plate with five at bats, three hits and three RBI. Kruse, Samens, Voeltz and Leslie Ludtke each finished with two hits.

The Lady Toppers were in Mondovi on Monday evening for a double-header against the Buffaloes. They lost the first game and won the second one.
