Boyceville senior Matthew Wathke selected as Menomonie Optimist Club Youth of the Month

The Menomonie Optimist Club provides Boyceville High School with the opportunity to recognize the achievements and efforts of an outstanding senior student. The selected student is then recognized as the Youth of the Month.

Matthew Wathke was selected to represent Boyceville High School as Menomonie Optimist Youth of the Month for March.

The program statement from the Menomonie Optimist Club describes the qualities and attributes that made Matthew a great choice.

“The purpose of the Optimist Club is to develop optimism as a philosophy of life: to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs, to aid and encourage the development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of man, his community, and the world.”

To recognize his accomplishments there was an Awards Banquet held in Menomonie on March 13th. Boyceville High School staff member, Mr. Tim Engel attended the Awards Banquet as well as Matthew’s parents Julie and Paul Wathke of Menomonie. In addition, Matthew’s grandparents LeRoy and Joan Schieffer of Eau Claire were also in attendance.

Mr. Engel had the opportunity to introduce Matthew and talk about his achievements, both in school and our community. Matthew is a member of the National Honor Society and will be recognized at graduation as achieving the title of Salutatorian for the Class of 2013. Matthew is also involved in Science Olympiad, earning numerous awards in multiple categories of Science Olympiad competitions over his high school career. His most recent medals come from the State Science Olympiad Tournament where he earned 5 medals, including 2 State Runner-Up awards. Matthew also excels on the playing field. He was recognized as an All-Conference Athlete for both his Sophomore and Senior year of Football. Matthew’s commitment to academics, athletics and his community has been tremendous.

This fall Matthew will be attending the University of Wisconsin Madison and he will be pursuing a degree in the Engineering field.

Matthew has been a valuable leader, supportive team member and a positive role model for his peers. His academic focus and commitment to leadership has made Matthew a wonderful choice for the Optimist Award. Congratulations to Matthew Wathke on being selected as an outstanding senior!
