Community garden in Glenwood City
By Kelsie Hoitomt
GLENWOOD CITY – Through the help of the Community Education program and a Healthier Together-St. Croix County, an idea for a community garden in Glenwood City has been presented.
Healthier Together-St. Croix County is a country-wide, community-based initiative for the purpose of creating and maintaining healthy communities.
This idea comes from one of the Healthier Together- St.Croix County initiatives to increase the number of children, adolescents and adults who are at a healthy weight and engaged in physical activity.
One of the objectives created to achieve this goal is to increase the number of community gardens in St. Croix County. Gardening involves the physical labor of planting, nurturing and learning about food and how it grows. Learning and experiencing the process of planting, growing and seeing the final product is the core of this entire idea.
A local task force created a toolkit for developing a community garden, including master gardeners, health care workers and interested community members in the process. It was the task force’s hope that this toolkit would be used by other organizations across the country to create and maintain a community garden of their own. The team combined a passion for sharing knowledge, improving the health of the community and volunteering for community needs.
There will be an informational/awareness meeting about the community garden on Thursday, March 21 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the board room by the front entrance to the high school.
