Lady Toppers tripped up by Vikings

GLENWOOD CITY — The Glenwood City girls knew they had a tough task ahead of them when the Colfax Vikings entered their gym for a Valentine’s Day matchup. Colfax had already secured yet another Dunn-St. Croix Conference title and the evening turned out to not be very rosy for the Toppers as they fell for the second time this year to the Vikings, this time 69-35.

The Vikings jumped out to their usual fast start but the Toppers stayed within four points, down 13-9 before ending the first quarter behind 22-12. Jen Kopacz scored all of her five points in the game in the quarter on a triple and two free throws while Olivia Weidling added a deuce and two free tosses to go with a shot from behind the arc from Kelsie Knops.

Glenwood was held to single digit scoring in each of the final three quarters and the Viking’s depth, aggressive defense and balanced scoring allowed them to continue to pull away. Down 39-21 at the half, Janessa Ullom came up with a pair of third quarter deuces, Mackenzie Wink added three points and Kadinger hit a short range shot but the Toppers were down 55-30 heading into the final quarter. Weidling managed to drop in a pair of shots from the paint and Ullom added a free throw to finish off the Glenwood scoring.

Weidling led the Toppers with 10 points and Kelsie Knops finished with six points coming from two three pointers. The team was 6 for 8 from the charity stripe while the Vikings were 19 for 22.
