Raiders defeat Bulldogs after huge first quarter

By Kelsie Hoitomt

BOYCEVILLE – The boys’ basketball team hosted the Elmwood Raiders last Friday, February 1 and lost in a high scoring game, 73-53.

This was the Raiders third highest scoring conference game of the season due in part to the 27 points they posted in the first quarter alone for a 27-10 start to the game. Six triples accounted for 18 of those points.

The Bulldogs were not able to catch up as they scored another ten points in the second quarter, but the Raiders had 15 points which put the score at 42-20 going into the half.

There wasn’t much of a change in the third quarter as the Raiders put up 17 points and the Bulldogs had 11, including a triple by Jordan Kuhn.

The Bulldogs played their best ball in the fourth quarter as they were able put down seven shots including a three-pointer from Kuhn and Brady Schutts and then six free throws for 22 points. The Raiders scored their least amount of points in the final quarter with 14.

The accuracy from outside the arc was what caused the Raiders to be successful as they drained ten triples. The Bulldogs had four triples; one from Michael Lagerstrom, two from Kuhn and the one from Schutts.

Ryan Williams led the team in points with 11 from four deuces and he was three for three at the foul line and also had eight rebounds. Kuhn and Mitch Leach each had ten points and Leach had seven rebounds. Schutts had nine points, Lagerstrom had seven, Zach Klassen had four and Matt Leach had two.

The Bulldogs have back to back games this week with Thursday night home game against St. Croix Central, then travel to Spring Valley Friday, February 8 for a make-up contest.
