Boyceville duels Minnesota teams at Hudson Invite, finishes 1-3

HUDSON – It’s like jumping from the frying pan directly into the fire.

After closing out 2012 at the always-tough Northern Badger Wrestling Classic, the Boyceville grapplers kicked off the new year at the Hudson Duals last Saturday,  January 5 against four quality squads from the west side of the Mississippi River.

The Bulldogs opened the tournament with an impressive 57-23 victory over Harding High but then fell short in its next three duals to Hutchinson (52-19), Plainview-Elgin-Millville (48-23) and Stillwater (43-33) to finish 1-3 against their Minnesota counterparts.

“It was a very tough tournament,” said Boyceville head coach, Jamie Olson. “But it gave us a chance to see new competition. We wrestled well at times and struggled at times. We were a little inconsistent, but overall it was a positive day.”

Although team victories proved hard to come by, several Bulldogs found individual success on the mats at Hudson. Dominic Olson, Wyatt Hansen and Josh Cormican each went undefeated and finished with unblemished marks of 4-0. Jon Harnisch (145) and Bryor Hellmann (160) each tallied three wins in four matches.

Dominic Olson continued to shine following his second place showing in the Northern. In Hudson, Olson scored a trio of pins and a major decision at 138 pounds.

Not to be outdone, Northern Badger champ Josh Cormican rolled his competition as well with a pair of pins and a major at 170 pounds.

Wyatt Hansen scored two pins to cap his perfect day of wrestling at 152 pounds.

Austin Wolfe (106) and Sawyer Swenson (120) both scored two wins in the tournament.

“Our weaknesses were definitely exploited,” noted Olson. “So it’s time to get to work and get ready for the tough conference schedule.”

A schedule that will get underway this week when Boyceville opens its Dunn-St. Croix dual season Thursday, January 10 at home against Mondovi. They will then have a week to prepare for the arrival of its biggest rival, Glenwood City, on January 17.

The following is a recap of Boyceville’s matches at the Hudson Duals.

Boyceville won nine of the first ten matches against Harding,MN, including four by forfeit and another four via pin, to build an insurmountable advantage of 51-6. James Lindo (126), Dylan Lamm (132), Dominic Olson (138), Wyatt Hansen (145) and Jake Lake (220) scored pins in a 57-23 Bulldogs’ victory.

Boyceville fell behind Plainview-Elgin-Millville 15-0 to open the third round of competition. But a resilient group of Dawgs rebounded and took a 23-15 advantage in large part due to major decisions by Dominic Olson (that gave Boyceville it’s first points) and Jon Harnisch and pins from Bryor Hellmann and Josh Cormican.

But much like the previous match against Hutchinson, Boyceville wrestlers surrendered five falls in the final six matches to loss the dual to PEM, 48-23.

But the Ponies saddled up for a big comeback.

And for a third straight dual, Boyceville surrendered five pins as Stillwater took six of the final seven matches and galloped away with a 43-33 victory.
