Bulldog wrestlers pin down second at Dells Duals

WISCONSIN DELLS — Don’t underestimate the Boyceville wrestling team.

Although the Bulldogs entered this season a bit more youthful and inexperienced than it has in previous years, the team appears more than capable of holding its own, even against some of the state’s best competition in any division.

With half of the squad competing in just its second varsity tournament, Boyceville aquitted itself like a hardened veteran squad to place second in its pool at the prestigious Wisconsin Dells Duals held at the Chula Vista Resort Saturday, December 8.

Despite wrestling in a pool that featured several larger schools including state-ranked, Division 2 schools West Salem/Bangor (10   in the latest poll) and Campbellsport (honorable mention), Boyceville earned a second with an impressive 4-1 dual mark in the tournament.

Boyceville knocked off Campbellsport (50-19), DeForest (39-30), Slinger (60-36), and Iowa Grant/Highland (45-30) for the runner-up trophy in the Red Pool. The team’s lone setback was a close 43-36 loss to eventually pool champion West Salem/Bangor. DeForest was third followed by Campbellsport, Iowa Grant/Highland, and Slinger.

The Bulldogs had three individuals finish the tournament with unblemished 5-0 records — Austin Wolfe (106 lbs.), Bryor Hellmann (152 lbs.), and Josh Cormican (160/170 lbs.). In addition, four other Boyceville grapplers came home with four wins from the Dells Duals including James Lindo (126/132 lbs.),  Dominic Olson (138 lbs.), John Harnisch (145 lbs.), and Logan McAbee-Thomas (160/170 lbs.)

The Dells Duals featured 26 teams broken into three, six-team pools (Black, Red, and White) and an eight-team Blue Pool. The Black Pool featured some of the state top-rated schools and included area teams Spring Valley/Elmwood and  Amery. Kaukauna won the Black Pool while Amery (2-3) finished fourth and Spring Valley/Elmwood (1-4), the defending Division 3 state runner-up placed fifth. Oshkosh North was the top finisher in the White Pool and LaCrosse Aquinas won the Blue Pool.

Boyceville finished the day with 28 pins including 19 in its first three duals.

The Bulldogs would need all those pins as they trailed by double digit margins in the first three dual matches of the tournament. Boyceville fell behind 24-0 in the round one action to Iowa Grant/Highland, 18-0 to Slinger in the second round, and then 25-6 in round three to West Salem/Bangor. The Bulldogs were able to overcome the first two deficits but fell short in their comeback bid against West Salem/Bangor.

After dropping the first four matches, all via pins, to Iowa Grant/Highland and falling behind 24-0, Boyceville showed some bite winning the next three bouts by falls as Austin Wolfe (106), Brock Swenson (113), and Sawyer Swenson (12) recorded pins and Tyler Stroo received a forfeit at 126 to knot the score at 24.

James Lindo would give Boyceville its first lead with a pin at 132 pounds. Iowa Grant would tie the score with decisions at the next two weight classes but then Boyceville closed out the match with three straight victories, Bryor Hellmann’s 7-5 decision at 152 and pins by Logan McAbee-Thomas and Josh Cormican, for the 45-30 dual match win.

Three quick pins by Slinger in the second dual had Boyceville down 18-0. But the Bulldogs would not trail for long. Boyceville received a pair of forfeits, 106 and 113 pounds, and then registered eight straight pins (Sawyer Swenson, James Lindo, Dylan Lamm, Dominic Olson, John Harnisch, Bryor Hellmann, Logan McAbee-Thomas and Josh Cormican) to post a resounding 60-23 victory.

Austin Wolfe’s pin at 106 pounds stood as the Bulldogs’ only victory in its first six matches against West Salem/Bangor. But then Dylan Lamm (132), Dominic Olson (138), John Harnisch (145), and Josh Cormican (160) all scored falls and Bryor Hellmann received a forfeit at 152 and suddenly Boyceville had vaulted to a 36-25 advantage. But three consecutive pins to end the dual helped West Salem/Bangor rally for the 43-36 win.

Boyceville built a 39-12 lead  over DeForest in the fourth round of competition and then held on as DeForest scored three straight wins including two pin falls, to win 39-30.

In the final round of the day, Boyceville crushed Campbellsport 50-19 as it had five pins to go along with a pair of forfeits and two major decisions.

Boyceville has a full slate of wrestling the next two weeks. The Bulldogs will host Cadott for Thursday’s home opener and will then travel north to the Osceola Dual Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 15. The squad will then be in Chetek next Tuesday, Dec. 18 to wrestle Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm before wrapping up its preholiday schedule with a home dual against Ladysmith on Dec. 20.
