Hammers go undefeated at John Timm Tournament; team takes fourth place
By Kelsie Hoitomt
GLENWOOD CITY – The 16th annual John Timm Wrestling Tournament was held last Saturday in the Glenwood City gymnasiums.
Schools participating in the tournament besides Glenwood City were Triton, Somerset, Amery, Spooner and Neillsville.
As a team, the Hilltoppers lacked some in performance as they finished in fourth place out of the six teams.
“I expected that we would be out of wrestling shape with the short period of practice we have had. I was pleased with our effort on the mat, but I was concerned about our mental preparation before matches. We need to focus on conditioning, mat awareness and mental focus,” said coach Shane Strong.
Individually, the “Hammers”, Riley Knops, Adam Holmquist and Austin Moe, went undefeated in the tournament.
This was Knops’ fourth time having an undefeated record in the tournament, which is now a standing record.
Knops is wrestling at his heaviest weight going into his senior year as he has worked his way up from 103 pounds to 120 pounds through the years.
Knops’ first match against Dustin Metzig of Spooner ended with a pin in 40 seconds. The second match against Jared Boon of Neillsville ended 2-0. The third match was won by forfeit. The fourth match against Blake Randall of Triton resulted in a pin at 3:45 and the final match against Logan Martell of Amery was a pin as well.
Holmquist wrestled at 145 and pinned Patrick Baker of Spooner in just over two minutes. He pinned Michael Chadwick of Neillsville in his second match. He beat Robert LeRoy of Somerset in a 8-2 decision in the third match and it was a 3-1 decision over Alex Head of Triton in the fourth match. His final match against Austin Klugow of Amery ended in a pin in the second period.
Moe wrestled his first three matches at 160 pounds. The first match against Sebastian Brobst of Spooner ended in a tech fall 16-1. He won by a 5-0 decision against Jake Rueth of Neillsville and a decision of 2-0 against Mitch Nichols of Amery. He wrestled at 152 and pinned Dallas Johnson of Somerset in just under two minutes. The final match was won by a forfeit.
Also finishing with a winning record of 4-1 was junior Blayze Wood. He wrestled his first three matches at 182 and then the final two at 170. He was pinned by Lucas Hagberg of Spooner, but redeemed himself by pinning wrestlers from Neillsville, Somerset and Triton and won by a decision of 7-5 against Chaz Hegna of Amery.
Donovan Fornal also finished the tournament with a winning record of 3-2 at 195 pounds. He won his first three matches by a forfeit and then pins against Neillsville and Somerset. He lost to wrestlers from Triton and Amery in his last two matches.
Heavy weight Alex Little was just shy of a winning record as he finished 2-3 on the day, which was also his first wrestling tournament. The two matches were won after he pinned Colton Brown of Somerset in 33 seconds and pinned Adam Vacura of Triton in 17 seconds.
Clarence Rogers was also undefeated on the varsity team due to two forfeits.
The Hilltoppers did not have any wrestlers for the 106 and 113 weight class, but those weights looked to be filled by the start of the new year.
Filling out the rest of the varsity roster were Damian Hoitomt (126) who was 1-2, Jake Carlson (132/138) who was 1-4, Billy Norenberg (138) who was 1-2, Hunter Chouinard (152) who was 1-2, Jeff Kopacz (160/170) who was 0-4, Brennan Kessler (170/182) who was 1-2 and Skylar Peterson (220) who was 0-5.
