GLENWOOD CITY — The Glenwood City High School class of 2019 has 14 honor students. Co-valedictorians Olivia Janson, Jatelyn Johnson, Abby Kremer, Tressa Peskar, and Maggie Wallin, and salutatorian Rebecca Peterson, are featured in a separate story in our graduation section. Below are the seven other honor students. Kyann Price, an honor student, elected not to submit a questionnaire.
Ashlee Peterson
Ashlee is the daughter of Shane and Cherri Peterson.
1. List your top three favorite high school classes. Why were they favorite classes? Horticulture/Landscape, Chemistry, Criminal Minds. Horticulture/Landscape and Chemistry was two of my favorite classes because it was very hands on and is the reason I am going to continue my education. Criminal Minds was new to the school this year thought the whole semester you get an all-around understanding of being a criminal justice major.
2. Describe the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school? Why was it memorable? The most memorable event that happened in high school was becoming an FFA officer. Many memories were made on the trips including four years of PALS Barnyard, World Dairy Expo, Worlds toughest rodeo and many other activities.
3. Provide a list of activities in which you were involved during high school and list the years of involvement. What was your favorite and why? FFA 4 years; FFA Officer 3 years (Treasurer, Vice president, President); Band/ Choir 4 years; Softball 4 years; Volleyball 4 years.
4. What are your plans for this summer after graduation? Summer job? After graduation I plan to find a summer job. I will also be working for Fireworks City in Baldwin the week of fourth of July. I also plan to hang out with friends as much as possible before summer is over.
5. Are you planning to attend college or technical school, and if so, where? What will be your major? If you are an undecided major, what are your interests right now? I will be attending University Wisconsin River Falls and majoring in Crop and Soil Science to become an Agronomist.
Morgan Lee
Morgan is the daughter of Chad and Sheila Lee.
1. List your top three favorite high school classes. Why were they favorite classes? My favorite high school classes are Biology, Animal Companion Care, and Animal Science. I really enjoyed those classes because I like science and animals. We also did a lot of hands on activities in these classes that I enjoyed.
2. Describe the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school? Why was it memorable? My most memorable moment in high school was when Alexa Holden and I accomplished chair, a stunt that we had been practicing, but could never get. We had been practicing chair for two years, and one day during basketball season we just hit it. After I put Alexa down we started jumping up and down and were cheering because no one beside one other girl on the cheer squad before had accomplished this stunt. That feeling of accomplishing something you have wanted for a long time, is a feeling you never forget.
3. Provide a list of activities in which you were involved during high school and list the years of involvement. What was your favorite and why? FFA:4 years; FCCLA:4 years; Band: 4 years; Choir:4 years; Jazz Choir: Senior year; Cheerleading both basketball and football: 4 years. Cheerleading was my favorite activity because it taught me so much about being a leader. I also established close friendships with people I thought I never would get to know.
4. What are your plans for this summer after graduation? Summer Job? I have worked at Glenhaven for two years now and plan on continuing working there over the summer. I work as a personal care worker at Glenhaven. Working there has given me a lot of knowledge I can use next year when I am in nursing school.
5. Are you planning to attend college or technical school, and if so, where? What will be your major? What will be your major? If you are an undecided major, what are your interests right now? I am attending CVTC next fall for nursing.
Olivia Scalze
Olivia is the daughter of Mike and Amy Scalze.
1. List your top three favorite high school classes. Why were they favorite classes? My top three favorite classes were Biology, Physics, and Horticulture. They all are science related, and the teachers have such a passion for their subjects that it made learning fun.
2. Describe the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school? Why was it memorable? The most memorable time in high school was when my class won the Homecoming Class vs Class Competition our senior year! Getting to see our class come together to do something, win and be so happy, was the best part.
3. Provide a list of activities in which you were involved during high school and list the years of involvement. What was your favorite and why? National Honors Society (10th-12th); Student Council (12th); Yearbook Committee (12th); Dunn-St. Croix Honors Choir (9th-12th); Concert Band and Choir (9th-12th); Jazz Choir (12th); Show Choir (10th-12th); All-School Musical (9th & 11th); UW-Eau Claire Choral Festival Honor Choir (12th); History Club Activities Chair (12th); Volleyball (9th-11th); Basketball (9th-12th); School Store Assistant Manager (12th)
My favorite activity was show choir because we always had a blast on Friday mornings singing and doing jazz squares as we laughed and ate donuts. Also, Mrs. Heirlmier is a super fun, caring, and creative music teacher who would make your day before it even started.
4. What are your plans for this summer after graduation? Summer Job? Over the summer I will be working at A&W in Baldwin, and at Glen Hills as a Park Laborer. I’m hoping to continue dog sitting, cleaning church, and I will be continuing to run my business, Odecals.
5. Are you planning to attend college or technical school, and if so, where? What will be your major? What will be your major? If you are an undecided major, what are your interests right now? I will be going to Winona State University in Minnesota this fall to get a Biology Life-Science Education Degree.
Delaney R. Quinn
Delaney is the daughter of Greg A. Quinn.
1. List your top three favorite high school classes. Why were they favorite classes? My top three favorite classes are marketing, psychology, and entrepreneurship. I really enjoyed marketing is it allowed me to look at things from both a product perspective and a consumer perspective. I enjoyed psychology as it forced me to understand more about behaviors and influence. Entrepreneurship truly pushed my creative side by creating my own business and learning all the aspects required of a business.
2. Describe the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school? Why was it memorable? My most memorable moment was my junior year where my best friend and I went to a home football game. We found out that there was a theme for that football game so we truly went all out on our costumes. When we arrived at the game no one else was dressed up for the theme of the game and we were so embarrassed. It was so embarrassing we left the game and went to my house to watch a movie.
3. Provide a list of activities in which you were involved during high school and list the years of involvement. What was your favorite and why? Basketball- 4years; Volleyball- 4years; Track- 4 years; DECA-3 years; History Club- 3 years; Student Council- 1 year; FCCLA- 2 years; National Honors Society- 3 years.
My favorite activity was basketball because I was able to see how years of hard work paid off. I enjoyed being a captain and working hard to be a role model and positive influence on the younger players. It was an enjoyable season with a great coaching staff and group of teammates. I was proud to be part of this team.
4. What are your plans for this summer after graduation? Summer Job? For this summer after graduation, I will be going on trips and working. At the beginning of June, I am going on a sister’s trip to Estes Park, Colorado. At the end of June, I will be attending FCCLA Nationals in Anaheim, California for a project that earned gold. I plan to work and prepare for college for the rest of the summer.
5. Are you planning to attend college or technical school, and if so, where? What will be your major? What will be your major? If you are an undecided major, what are your interests right now? This fall I will be attending Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. I will be majoring in Marketing and minoring in Psychology. I’m excited for the next step in my career plans.
Gavin Riley Samp
I am the son of Mike and Kristin Barstad and Scott and Amy Samp.
1. List your top three favorite high school classes. Why were they favorite classes? My favorite class is AP Calculus because I enjoy math and I feel I thrive in that class. My second favorite class was Human Anatomy I really enjoyed learning about maladies and diseases. My third favorite class was drawing and design. The curriculum was more laid back and I was able to express my creative mind.
2. Describe the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school? Why was it memorable? My friends and I have sat at the same lunch table since sixth grade but on the second day of sophomore year Caleb threw a sliced cucumber onto the wall. We started to make bets on how long it would last, a few days, weeks, or a month. It’s still there to this day, just painted over.
3. Provide a list of activities in which you were involved during high school and list the years of involvement. What was your favorite and why? Honors Choir 2016-2019; National Honors Society 2018-2019; Class Officer 2016-2018; Choral Fest Honors Choir 2018; Art Club 2018-2019; FCCLA 2016-2018; Choir 2015-2019; Spring Sport Golf 2016-2019.
When I was given the chance to go to Choral Fest I was skeptical at first. Once it was done I was sad it ended. It was an amazing time and I made two new friends. Being able to sing with some of the best people around was a true honor.
4. What are your plans for this summer after graduation? Summer Job? I’ve worked at Countryside Coop in town for over two years and I plan to continue to do so. I want to save some money for college so I plan on getting in as many hours as I can. I also want to do things with my friends before I move away.
5. Are you planning to attend college or technical school, and if so, where? What will be your major? What will be your major? If you are an undecided major, what are your interests right now? I plan to attend North Dakota State University for four years. I plan to either major in engineering and minor in retail or fashion or double major for both. I am excited to be a part of an amazing engineering program at NDSU.
Hanna Strehlo
Hanna is the daughter of Becky Oliver and Scott Strehlo
1. List your top three favorite high school classes. Why were they favorite classes? My top three favorite classes are Human Anatomy, Chemistry, and Intro to Agriculture. I enjoyed all of these classes the most because I was interested in these topics the most. I like learning about the human body, and math. Intro to Ag was a different class I wasn’t used to and I enjoyed learning about agriculture. I also enjoyed learning with my classmates and creating good memories with them.
2. Describe the most memorable event that happened while you were in high school? Why was it memorable?
My most memorable moment in high school was when my best friend, Delaney, took me to a Panic! At the Disco concert for my birthday. Then we went to South Dakota for spring break with her sister and her friend. This was the most memorable because I had a good time and got to travel.
