The Lady Bulldogs’ basketball squad faced a pair of tough opponents on the road last week when it matched up against once-beaten Amery, leaders of the Middle Border Conference and the Dunn-St. Croix’s third-place Elk Mound Mounders.
Unfortunately, Boyceville fell short, losing both contests and saw its season records fall to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the D-SC.
The length and depth of the Amery Warriors team proved to be too big of a challenge for the Bulldogs as they suffered a 58-28 in Amery last Tuesday evening, January 15. With a mere eight points in the first half, the Bulldogs found themselves trying to dig out of a never-ending hole that continued into the second half and finished in a 30-point defeat.
Elk Mound’s intensity and height also took a toll on Boyceville in Thursday’s conference contest. The Bulldogs’ inability to stop Mounders’ powerhouse post player, Morgan Radtke, especially in the first half of the contest, and the outside shots lead the locals down the road to defeat by a 64-30 count in the January 17 game.
The Lady Bulldogs hosted the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves last evening, Tuesday, before heading to Glenwood City on Friday, January 25, for their second rivalry meeting of the season. January 29 will see Boyceville host the Cumberland Beavers in its second-to-last, non-conference game of the season.
Amery
Amery’s size and length proved too much for Boyceville to handle in the pair’s January 15 game played in Amery especially after the Bulldogs’ offense struggled all evening.
The Warriors took the win of the Bulldogs by a 30-point margin and a score of 58-28.
“It was a very difficult night for us offensively,” said Bulldogs coach Jolene Bird.
Amery put a large lead on Boyceville in the first 18 minutes of the contest as it held the Bulldogs to just eight first-half points while netting 28 by the intermission.
Despite a staged comeback in the second half in which Boyceville scored 20 points, it was not enough to even get close to Amery who posted 30 more points in the final 18-minute half.
Boyceville’s junior point guard, Rachel Prestrud, however, gave the Bulldogs’ a might offensive effort in the game. Prestrud managed 21 of the Bulldogs’ 28 points against the Warriors. She put in five three-point shots and netted three more doubles to finish with a new season and career highs.
Mya Lagerstrom and Jensine Boesl were hot from the foul line with Lagerstrom going four-of-four and Boesl sank her two shots in the second half.
“Amery’s size and length defensively made it very difficult to get anything easy.”
1,000 plus point scorer, Madelyn Granica, was the driving force for Amery as she sank five buckets from inside the paint and went eight-of-eleven from the line to tally 18 points.
Only four Boyceville players scored in the two halves including Emma Ouellette with a single bonus shot against Amery.

Elk Mound

Elk Mound’s senior center Morgan Radtke scored 18 points, including 14 in a decisive first half in which the Mounders vaulted to a 40-14 lead, and the rest of the Mounders crew chipped in to toss down ten three-point shot to route the visiting Boyceville Bulldogs 64-30 last Thursday, January 17.
While Radtke was equal to the entire Boyceville offense in the first half, the Mounders picked up five three pointers from four other players to build a 26-point half time lead.
Boyceville, who struggled to put the basketball through the hoop, got single threes from Rachel Prestrud and Kady Grambow along with a hoop and two foul shot from Ana Evenson and a four-for-four performance at the charity stripe by Emma Ouellette to account all of the Bulldogs’ first-half scores.
After Ana Evenson scored a bucket for the Bulldogs’ first points of the game, Boyceville’s players and fans watched as Elk Mound went on an 18-0 run to take control of the game. A pair of good foul shots by Boyceville junior Emma Ouellette ended the Mounders offensive splurge but it was a bit too late to salvage the game for the Lady Bulldogs.
Things got only slightly better for the Bulldogs’ offense in the second half. Prestrud and Grambow each added a second triple in the period, Evenson tallied a basket and four free throws and Alyx Bloom and Harper each chipped in for a field goal for Boyceville’s 16 second-half points.
Meanwhile Elk Mound chucked in 24 more including three treys by Sydney Simpson.
Evenson led the Bulldogs with ten points followed by six each from Rachel Prestrud and Kady Grambow on two triples each and four points from Emma Ouellette, all on free throws.
