Boyceville’s girls basketball team earned a split of conference contests last week, beating Spring Valley at home January 8 before losing at the home of D-SC leader Colfax January 11.
With last Tuesday’s 46-39 win over Spring Valley, Boyceville eclipsed last season’s win total of five. The victory against the Cardinals was the Lady Bulldogs’ sixth of the season and third in conference play.
But the win proved to be a costly one as junior starter Tyra Kostman suffered a serious knee injury in the opening minute of the game and will miss the remainder of the season according to head coach Jolene Bird.
Sans Kostman, Boyceville packed up and headed east down Highway 170 to Colfax last Friday for a date with the league-leading Vikings, who were fresh off a 69-57 triumph over previously unbeaten and defending D-SC Durand on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs stayed close through a large portion of the first half until a Vikings’ junior Kameri Meredith led a Colfax scoring splurge in the waning minutes of the half. The Vikings continued to enlarge their lead following intermission and went on to take the contest 66-34 to remain unbeaten in conference game at 8-0.
Boyceville, meanwhile, is tied with rival Glenwood City for fourth place with a 3-4 record in the D-SC girls’ standing and is an even 6-6 heading into a busy slate of games that included road games against non-conference foe Amery last evening (Tuesday, January 15) and at third-place Elk Mound tomorrow, Thursday, January 17 to wrap up its three game road trip. The Bulldogs return home to host Elmwood/Plum City next Tuesday, January 22.
Spring Valley
In a bittersweet 7-point win against the Spring Valley Cardinals last Tuesday, Bulldogs’ head coach Jolene Bird expressed that the team was happy to win but saddened by the loss of one of its leaders, Tyra Kostman, to an injury just a minute into the game.
“I am very proud of the girls staying mentally tough to get the win,” Bird stated of the 46-39 victory.
Kostman suffered either an ACL or MCL tear in her knee and will be out the remainder of the season, according to Bird. Kostman found out last Wednesday, January 9, the severity of the injury.
Juniors Rachel Prestrud and Emma Ouellette stepped up for the Bulldogs in Kostman’s absence.
Prestrud put in a season-high 14 points stemming from one double, three triples and was three-of-eight from the charity stripe, while Ouellette scored 13 points against the Cardinals off of three doubles and was seven-of-fifteen from the line.

Boyceville went into half time with a six-point lead and continued to fight through back-and-forth play with Spring Valley to eventually secure the win by seven points.
“It was a very physical game and if we had shot better from the free throw line we would have had a more comfortable win,” said Bird.
The Bulldogs stretched their lead to as large as ten points in the second half but the Cardinals kept battling back and cut their deficit to as little as five including in the final minute and a half before the hosts closed out the game with free throws and some timely baskets.
Kady Grambow worked her way around the paint with two doubles and a pair of foul shots for the Bulldogs and teammate Ana Evenson tacked on three more doubles and was two-of-four from the foul line.
Contributing to Boyceville’s win were players Megan Hintzman with two points, Mya Lagerstrom also sank a double, and senior Alyx Bloom hit the net for a bonus shot.

Colfax
Boyceville traveled to Colfax last Friday evening to take on the D-SC leaders and ended the evening with another loss after doing some good things out of the gate, explained coach Bird.
“Unfortunately for us, they (Colfax) just have too many weapons from the arc to defend,” Bird said.
Boyceville limited Colfax to just two three-pointers in the first half but the Vikings shooters found their range in the second half, sinking seven triples en route to the 66-34 victory. Leading the charge was Vikings’ junior Kameri Meredith who finished with 23 points after scoring a career-high 30 points in Colfax’s Tuesday win over Durand.
Leading the Bulldogs was their junior floor general Rachel Prestrud with 12 points all coming from outside the paint. Prestrud had one three hit the net in the first half before sinking three triples in the second half to account for all her points.
As the first half got underway it looked like Boyceville would keep up with Colfax as the score was 13-12 in the Viking’s favor with 7:36 to play in the half. But Colfax’s Meredith ignited a 18-3 Vikings’ run as she scored 18 points in the opening half to give the hosts a 31-15 halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs deficit only grew in the second half when the Vikings opened on a 18-0 splurge to open a 49-15 lead with 10:30 left in the game.
With a mere 15 points in the first half, Boyceville was only able to score 19 more in the second half. Colfax scored more points in the second half, 35, than Boyceville did in the entire contest. Besides Meredith, the Vikings got 11 points from Alyssa Dachel before she left with a ankle injury in the second half and ten of its players score.
Ana Evenson was the Bulldogs’ second-leading scorer in the game as she made her way to the foul line and sank six-of-seven of her shots in her minutes played. Teammate Emma Ouellette hit the glass for five points, while Alyx Bloom, Chrissa Kersten and Jensine Boesl each netted three points for the Bulldogs. Kersten hit a double and foul shot, Bloom hit the rim from outside the paint for three and Boesl sank a double and a bonus shot.
Sophomore Kady Grambow added to Boyceville’s total points with a single double from inside.
“We gave away too many points with turnovers,” coach Bird stated.
