BOYCEVILLE SENIOR Nick Goodell (in front and on top) needed just a few second more to score potential match-winning points in the 152-pound bout. BOYCEVILLE — Tis the season for gifts and the Boyceville wrestling team received plenty of them in a pair of dual meet wins last week.
The Bulldogs grapplers collected several forfeits and plenty of pins as they pummeled Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm and Clear Lake in consecutive home duals.
Boyceville pocketed a 60-15 victory over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm in the annual “Battle of the Bulldogs” last Tuesday, December 18 and followed it up two days later, Thursday, December 20, with a 58-12 triumph of a depleted Clear Lake squad that had just five varsity wrestlers.
The wins improved the Bulldogs season dual meet record to 7-9.
Boyceville, who enjoyed a few days off for the Christmas holiday, returns to action this Friday and Saturday, December 28 and 29 in the annual Northern Badger Wrestling Classic at River Falls High School. The Bulldogs will christen the new year on Saturday, January 5th in Merrill for a tournament.
Bulldogs bite Warriors
If you marked your calendars for this match, you might have been a tad disappointed.
In previous seasons, the Boyceville-Clear Lake dual promised outstanding wrestling as both squads were often filled with state-caliber and ranked wrestlers.
And while the Bulldogs still have some top-notch state talent along with a mix of promising youngsters, the Warriors lineup appeared to be all but deleted.
Clear Lake offered up just five varsity wrestlers in its latest dual against Boyceville last Thursday in the Bulldogs’ gymatorium.
The Warriors won three of the five contested matches but surrendered eight forfeits to the Bulldogs who went on to post a quick 58-12 win in the dual that last barely 25 minutes.
Despite the short-work night, Boyceville head coach Jamie Olson praised his grapplers.
“I thought the guys had a lot of fight tonight,” noted Olson. “Clear Lake came in a little short handed, but the guys they sent out are quality guys.”
The dual actually opened with one of the better tilts of the evening which pitted Bulldogs’ freshman Nick Hillman against Warrior senior Korey Catts.
“Freshman Nick Hillman wrestled really well against a senior and just lost by decision,” stated Olson. “Catts is a tough kid and we matched his intensity throughout and had a chance in the third to get back points.
Catts prevailed 8-2 in the pitched match at 170 pounds.
Boyceville then received three straight forfeits – Megan Krosnoski at 182, Trett Joles at 195 and Domonic Schreiber at 220 – to vault to an 18-3 advantage.
Clear Lake heavyweight Sam Dusek scored a pin over Boyceville Keegan Plemon but Olson was pleased with his freshman wrestler’s effort.
“Keegan Plemon also did a great job at heavy weight going up and wrestling another senior and a giant Sam Dusek. Keegan didn’t back down and fought hard, that’s all we ask of these young guys.”
Boyceville got outstanding performances from a pair of freshmen in its two match victories. Josiah Berg scored a major shut out over Shane Larson of Clear Lake, 10-0, at 113 pounds and Ira Bialzik pinned his warrior opponent, Trent Avery, just 48 seconds into their match at 138 pounds.
“Freshman Josiah Berg majored a ranked opponent in Shane Larson, “ stated Olson. “Jo has been really good for us all year and I can’t wait to see him roll at the Badger.”
“Another Freshman in Ira Bialzik continues to wrestle really well and delivered a pin for us at 138,” Olson added. “Ira has won his last 6 out of 7 matches.”
Boyceville senior Nick Goodell lost a tough 2-0 decision at 152 pounds to Ivan Ruble. Goodell nearly won the match on a Granby Roll but time ran out before he could complete the move.
Brice Evenson (106), Eli Swanson (126), Nathan Stuart (132), Tyler Dormanen (145) and Brock Schlough (160) also received forfeits for the Bulldogs.
There was a double forfeit at 120 pounds.
