Lady Bulldog throwers shine outdoors

By Missy Klatt

WINONA – Finally an outdoor meet for the Bulldog track team as they traveled to St. Mary’s University in Winona this past Saturday, April 21st to compete at the West Salem Outdoor Invitational. The fresh air and sunshine did wonders for the Lady Throwers as they dominated the shot put and discus events. In the shot put, senior Paulina Weinke took first place with a throw of 32’5”. Teammates Haley Wold, Jasmine Windsor and Satina Chilson took 6th, 8th and 11th places respectively.

In the discus the Lady Dawgs faired even better as they captured 1st, 2nd, 4th and 10th place. This time it was Wold on top with a throw of 108’8”, just edging out Weinke by two inches. Chilson followed in fourth and Windsor came in tenth.

Coach Corey Day commented that “it was great to be outside and especially nice for the discus throwers because we have not been able to compete in that event yet this year.  The girls took full advantage going first and second with marks edging where they left off last year.  Haley and Paulina dedicated themselves to the weight room and open practices through the summer.  It is very rewarding watching their hard work pay off.

Emily Voelker also had a good showing for the day with a pair of third place finishes.  She took third in the 800m run with a time of 2:41.47 and third in the pole vault with a 7’ vault. The girls 4x100m relay team, consisting of Paulina Weinke, Chesney Leslie, Naomi Hillman and Chrissa Kersten also took third place honors.

On the boys side it was again Brandon Kenefick dominating in the pole vault.  He easily took first place with a 12’ vault. A foot and a half higher than his nearest competitor. Kenefick also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 95’10”.

Freshman Nathan Corr continues to run well, taking third in the 3200m with a time of 11:40.54. While his brother Rian took sixth in the 800m race. Another notable for the boys was Justin Lombardo with a fifth place finish in the 300m hurdles.
