WISTAX Fact: Home values remain below 2008 levels

Between January 1, 2008 and January 1, 2016, residential property value in Wisconsin declined 4.4%. The drop was even larger for existing properties; in other words, factoring out new home construction. 

In only 11 counties, located primarily in the west central part of the state, did home values recover sufficiently to exceed 2008 levels. In the remaining 61 counties (85%), 2016 values remained below 2008 levels. In 26, values were off more than 10%. With few exceptions, these are located near the Illinois border, in central Wisconsin, and across the north. In another 22 counties, values of existing residential property dropped between 5% and 10%.  These counties generally border regions of greatest decline.
