Boyceville softball grounds Eagles to pull even in D-SC

By Cara L. Dempski

ALMA — After having its April 25 home game against rival Glenwood City suspended due to a rain storm, the Lady Bulldogs softball team had to make the long trek to Alma to battle the Pepin/Alma Eagles.

The temperatures and weather for the April 28 match-up were markedly better than the team saw earlier in the week against Glenwood City. Between the sunlight and the warmer temperatures, it seemed an ideal night to play softball.

The Bulldogs apparently agreed, as they returned to Boyceville after earning an 8-1 win to move them to 3-3 in the Dunn-St. Croix and 6-4 overall.

Although both squads finished with eight hits apiece, it was the visiting Bulldogs that made the most of their opportunities.

Morgan Kuhn and Kayla Hoff got the Boyceville squad on the board in the first with a pair of runs thanks to a two-RBI double off the bat of Marissa Dormanen.

The Eagles picked up their run in the third, making it a 2-1 contest.

Dormanen and McKenna Weber reached base to open the Bulldogs’ fourth inning. Both crossed the plate thanks to a pair of fielder choices.

The Bulldogs’ bats really started to smoke in the seventh, when Kuhn, Amber Retzloff, Madysn Riek and Hoff all made it home to make the score 8-1.

Kuhn and Retzloff had back-to-back singles to start the seventh. Madysn Riek reached safely on a fielder’s choice that loaded the bases. Kayla Hoff then stepped to the plate an unloaded with a triple to deep right-center field to score three. Hoff then scored on Dormanen’s base hit on the very next atbat.

Seven Bulldogs got hits highlighted by Dormanen’s 2-for-2 performance.

Hoff and Dormanen tied with three RBIs each, while Kuhn and Tori Kostman recorded one runner batted in apiece. Dormanen is also credited with a double, while Hoff recorded a triple.

Tyra Kostman occupied the circle for seven innings and threw 113 pitches. She outdueled her counterpart, Erin Seifert, allowing eight hits, one run, and finished with six strikeouts.

Monday’s (May 1) home game with Durand was postponed due to more rain and has been rescheduled for May 12. Boyceville was to have played a doubleheader in Colfax yesterday before hosting Mondovi Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs will be in Elk Mound next Monday, May 8 and will host Spring Valley on Tuesday, May 9.
