News items from the Colfax school district

COLFAX — During the Colfax Board of Education meeting April 24, school board members learned of the following news items:

Anne Frank
The eighth grade students attended the play, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” on Monday, April 24, at the Park Square Theater in Minnesota. The students prepared for the play by reading the book. John Dachel, principal, reported that upon their return, the students were quite enthusiastic about their experience of having attended the play. 

Spotlight Night
The annual Spotlight Night Variety Show was held April 7 in the Martin Anderson Gymnasium. Caden Erickson, eighth grade, won the competition. Caden performed “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and accompanied himself with a ukulele. He was selected as the winner by ballots from the audience. [At the middle school and high school spring concert April 25, Carrie Christensen, music teacher, reported that the music department had raised $5,000 during Spotlight Night. The money will go toward music camp scholarships for Colfax students.]

Forensics
The Forensics team brought home gold and silver from the state meet April 21 in Madison. Receiving gold, with perfect scores, were Hannah Yingst, Kaely Rieck, Leslie Ritenour, Tiffany Tetzlaff and Tate Russell. Napoleon Nosker received a silver, one point away from the gold. 

Power Lifting
Two participants from Colfax went to the National Power Lifting competition in Pennsylvania. Mikaela Liebfried took second place in the nation, and Spencer Herrick took fifth place in the nation.

Accelerated Reader
All together, 374 students are using the Accelerated Reader program, and they have passed 24,158 quizzes, reported Trevor Hovde, Colfax Elementary principal. The students have passed 24,158 quizzes, and the average percent correct for all students is 90.9 percent. Students have read a combined total of more than 112 million words this year in AR. Colfax has 24 students who have read over one million words; six students who have read over two million words; two students who have read over three million words; and one student who has read over four million words.
