Three horses break through ice near Elk Mound
ELK MOUND — Three horses that got out of their pasture in the Town of Elk Mound went to a neighboring property where they broke through the ice of a pond Sunday morning.
One horse was rescued from the water alive, but the other two horses died from being submerged in the cold, deep water, according to a news release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department.
The Dunn County communications center received a report at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday about the three horses that broken through the ice on a private pond near the intersection of 830th Street and 640th Avenue in the Town of Elk Mound.
Neighbors in the area, along with the Elk Mound Fire Department, the Menomonie Fire Department, the Colfax Rescue Squad and deputies from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, worked to get the horses out of the pond.
