GC girls basketball loses to Cameron, Spring Valley
By Cara L. Dempski
After finishing the 2015–16 with a 21-2 overall record and 12-2 record in the Dunn-St. Croix, the Hilltopper girls have not gotten off to a good start this season.
After Glenwood City lost its conference opener to Plum City/Elmwood the previous week, the team traveled to Cameron to meet the Comets on December 5 and returned home December 8 to host Spring Valley.
Unfortunately the Lady Toppers came up empty-handed and remained winless on the young season.
The Toppers returned home with an 84-37 non-conference loss at the hands of the Comets a week ago Monday and then lost a home heartbreaker to Spring Valley just three days later.
Glenwood City narrowly missed copping its first win this season after the Cardinals pecked out a 42-40 win over the Hilltopper girls.
The latest two defeats dropped the Lady Toppers’ mark to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Dunn-St. Croix play.
The Hilltoppers play two of their next three games on the road. They were in Mondovi last night and will host the league-leading Durand Panthers tomorrow evening (December 15) before finished their pre-holiday schedule with a non-conference contest in Amery on December 20.
Cameron
Head coach Dean Fayerweather had nothing to say after the Hilltoppers’ December 5 trip to Cameron.
The score of the game spoke for itself.
Glenwood sophomore Delaney Quinn, junior Jenesa Klinger, and senior Becca Moll each logged eight points on the way to the Toppers’ final score of 37.
To contrast, the Comets’ leading scorers were juniors Maddy Otto (20 points), Ali Kringle (14 points), and Megan Warner (12 points). The Cameron girls logged 84 points by the end of the game.
Senior Mariah Voeltz contributed four points to the Toppers’ score, Hanna Strehlo added three more, and Briana Barstad, Jatelyn Crossley and Michaela Nyhus all shot for two.
Glenwood City accrued 14 fouls and was seven for 14 on free throws. Cameron committed 16 fouls and shot five for 11 with free throws.

Spring Valley
Coach Fayerweather said the home game against the Cardinals was a tough one to lose.
“We were up for most, if not all, of the game, until the last three minutes,” Fayerweather stated. “Then Spring Valley tied and went ahead.”
The Hilltopper head girls basketball coach said the December 8 match-up was a battle between two equally matched teams, but at the end of the game, the Toppers missed some easy shots and the Cards defended the post very well.
The Glenwood City girls shot 60 percent for free throws, but registered 17 fouls against the Cardinals. Spring Valley edged the Toppers on free throw percentage with 61 percent and committed only 16 fouls.
Senior Becca Moll led the Glenwood offense with five field goals and two free throws to record 12 points for the team. Mariah Voeltz was not far behind Moll with three field goals and three free shots for nine points.
Delaney Quinn and Briana Barstad each took credit for six points. Quinn earned her score with a pair of shots for three, while Barstad chalked up a trio of field goals. Sophomore Hanna Strehlo dropped in two field goals for a total of four points, and Jenesa Klinger settled for a lone shot from outside the line to grab three points.
Spring Valley senior guard Sarah Kaveh led the Cardinals in scoring with nine to her credit.
