EMHS celebrating homecoming week of October 3

ELK MOUND — The Mounders will have daily dress-up competitions, 28 members of the royal court, and a jam-packed Friday that will culminate in a football contest between the Mounders and Durand, and it’s all thanks to homecoming week.

The fun started Monday, which was college attire day. It continued yesterday with tourist day, and today is tie-die day.

Thursday will be Pokémon day, with the seniors wearing blue, juniors in yellow, sophomores in red, and freshmen in grey. On the big day, Friday, students are encouraged to wear orange and black for Mounder day.

Teacher Dave Lew stated students in the day’s attire will be counted during each lunch period and must be at least 50 percent dressed in the day’s theme in order to be counted toward their class total.

Students are expected to report to their homeroom classes at 8:06 a.m. on Friday and will remain there until 8:20. There will be a movie shown in the auditorium from 8:25 a.m. – 10 a.m. and then students will be dismissed to activities.

From 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., students are offered the choice of watching powder puff football on the football field or boys volleyball in the gym. For students who do not choose to participate in either activity, there will be board games set up in the cafeteria.

The sophomore and juniors will eat lunch at 11:30 a.m. and the freshman and seniors will eat at 12:20 p.m. Band students will eat at 11:30 a.m., regardless of their class, in order to be prepared for the pep rally.

At 1 p.m., everyone will gather in the high school gym for the homecoming pep rally prior to the parade. There will be cheering competitions, music from the band, games, and the crowning of the homecoming king and queen during the rally.

There will be a 25-minute period between the pep rally’s end and the start of the parade at 2:15 p.m. Lew has asked all parade units and drivers to have proof of insurance filed in the district office no later than 10 a.m. Friday, October 7. Drivers must be 18 years of age or older.

The parade will proceed west down University Street and terminate where the street intersects with County Highway H/Holly Avenue. All students are dismissed at the end of the parade, and should immediately report to their schools to retrieve their personal items and meet their buses as necessary.

The football game will kick off at 7 p.m. and promises to be a good match-up after the Mounders qualified for the post-season after last week’s game against Boyceville, and Durand handed Glenwood City their first season loss to remain at the top of the Dunn-St. Croix.

Students and teacher chaperones will need their dancing shoes Saturday evening when the homecoming dance will be held. The king, queen, and court will greet their loyal subjects during the event.

This year’s court is comprised of students participating in each fall activity. Freshmen Chase Rhude and Sophie Cedarblade, sophomores Colton Ward and Abby Kasper, and juniors Brandon Gilbertson and Emily Bartig will represent the football team. Seniors Dane Lew and Lauren Scharlau will represent the football and volleyball teams, Tyler Sahm and ShaeLin Hogenson will represent the football team and cheer squad, and Noah Zurbuchen and Jenna Storing will represent the football team and football assistants.

Freshman Andrew Pathos and Kristin Martinson will represent the cross country team along with sophomores Nate Bechel and Alana Plaszcz, juniors Nathaniel Schreiber and Anna Wolgemuth, and seniors Matt McLaughlin and Kaitlyn Byer.

Blaze Todd and Kayli Solberg are the freshmen representing the band. Joining them will be sophomores Sam Gerber and Brook Plaszcz, juniors Ryan Mohr and Kourtney Zurbuchen, and seniors Hunter Gagner and Sarah Sweeney.
