EM comes up with first win against Eleva-Strum

STRUM — So far this season, Elk Mound’s record tells the tale of two teams.

After coming off a 21-6 home loss to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser to the season August 18, the Mounders looked like a completely different team last Thursday in Strum  as they evened their 2016 mark at 1-1 with an impressive 38-0 whitewashing of the Eleva-Strum Cardinals in a non-conference tilt.

“This is Elk Mound football,” Coach Dave Lew said following the game’s conclusion.

In a decisive victory, Elk Mound’s defense held the Cardinals to just 80 yards over 26 carries, while the Mounder offense seemingly moved the chains at will with 42 carries for 207 yards. The receiver corps tacked on another 82 yards, helping quarterback Dane Lew to a perfect 6-6 for pass attempts and completions.

Lew ended the game with 88 yards passing in a game that was a definite turnaround for Elk Mound on both sides of the ball.

“This is the effort we expected,” Coach Lew said. “These guys want to perform and those hearts are big, and I’m so proud of those young men for bouncing back from last week.”

Senior running back Hunter Adleman pushed the Mounders to a good start after a one-yard touchdown run capped a 13-play opening drive. Adleman also added the conversion run to five Elk Mound an 8-0 advantage with 3:08 left in the opening quarter.

After the Cardinals were forced through a series of three-and-outs, the Mounder put together its second scoring drive. The 11-play foray ended with quarterback Dane Lew handing off the ball to Ben Lambele, who punched it in from three yards out to tag another six points on the board for the Mounders with 7:16 left in the half. Adleman cracked the Cardinal defense to add another two points conversion and make the score 16-0.

A scant three minutes later, Lew connected with Lambele on a touchdown-scoring pass play that covered 30 yards. Elk Mound again went to Adleman on the conversion and he delivered, making good on his third consecutive run to raise the score to 24-0 in the Mounders’ favor at half.

The Elk Mound offensive line wore down the Cardinal defense, which led Coach Lew to take a chance and stretch his quarterback and son a little by letting him air the ball.

“Our plan was to run the ball, and they (Eleva-Strum) went to a really stout lineup there, and we tried opening up just a bit,” Lew said.

This paid off for the Mounders as Dane Lew collaborated with receivers Lambele, Hunter Johnson and Chandler Schreiber for their 88 yards and a score.

The second half of the game saw tack on a pair of touchdown runs, one in each quarter.

Tyler Sahm carried it in from 22 yards out to make the score 30-0 with just 1:16 left in the third. Brady Redwine struck gold with his 8-yard run at 8:39 of the fourth. Redwine also added subsequent conversion to tally the game’s final point in 38-0 Mounders’ victory.

Senior running back Noah Zurbuchen joined the Mounders on the field for his first game of the season after an unfortunately timed appendix procedure that left him out of last week’s game.

The Mounders will host Glenwood City for the pair’s first conference match-up on September 2. Glenwood City will go into Elk Mound with a 2-0 record.
