COLFAX — A six-run fourth inning and four more runs in the sixth spelled doom for the Colfax softball team as Glenwood City took a 14-4 win Thursday, May 19 on the Lady Vikings’ home field in the conference and season finale for both squads.
The Hilltoppers finished with a 11 to four advantage at the plate in the six-inning contest. The win propelled the Toppers to a 6-7 conference mark and a second-place tie with Pepin/Alma in the final small Dunn-St. Croix standings. The Vikings fell to 3-10 in conference and overall play and finished last in the large D-SC conference rankings.
Glenwood City started quickly, scoring a run in the top of the first to gain the early advantage.
Colfax, however, answered right back and took their only lead of the game as sophomore Mikaela Leibfried and sophomore Tamara Huffman came around to score in the bottom half of the first inning to give the Vikings a 2 to 1 advantage.
Glenwood City came back to score a pair in the top of the second inning and retake the lead by a run.
The big blow came in the fourth inning as Glenwood City loaded the bases with two outs and hit a grand slam and added two more runs later in the inning to plate six runs in the frame. The Lady Vikings were unable to get out of the jam as they dropped a pop up that would end the inning a batter before the grand slam was hit.
Colfax tried to fight back in the bottom half of the fourth as it scored two runs when freshman Kaitlyn Field and junior Dailyn Mortenson came around to score to cut the deficit to five.
The Lady Hilltoppers, however, continued to pour on the offense as they added one more in the fifth and four more in the top of the sixth to make it a ten-run lead and end the game as Colfax could not produce anymore offense.
On the mound for Colfax was Tamara Huffman, who picked up the loss and was roughed up by the Glenwood City batters on the afternoon.
Colfax batters only mustered four hits on the afternoon. Mikaela Leibfried had three of those hits while sophomore McKayla Mattson had the other.
Out of the four runs the Lady Vikings were able to produce, only two of them came from an RBI. Picking up the two RBIs on the afternoon were senior Lakken Meredith and Mikaela Leibfried.
Up next for the Lady Vikings is the WIAA Regional as they traveled to Cadott Tuesday, May 24 for the first round of the playoffs. A win and the tenth-seeded Vikings will play in Durand today (May 25). The regional finals will be played Friday, May 27.
