Colfax picks up first win of the year

by Samuel Ripp

BOYCEVILLE — The Colfax baseball team was in action Monday, May 2 in Boyceville and picked up their first win of the year by a score of 11-5.

Colfax has had a rough season so far having lost seven straight games before busting out a much needed win against conference opponent Boyceville.

Colfax scored their highest run total of the year and also held their opponent to their lowest run total of the year as well.

On the mound and pitching very well was senior Jarrod Rudi, who picked up his first win of the year along with his team’s first win of the season. Rudi went the full seven innings giving up three hits and five runs, but struck out six Bulldogs.

Colfax started the game off with a bang by scoring three early runs in the top of the first inning, with the first four batters collecting hits. They would add two more in the top of the second to quickly go up 5-0. Boyceville would get one run back in the bottom of the second, however Colfax would add three more in the fifth inning to stay hot. The Bulldogs would try to rally back in the bottom half of the inning by scoring two and make it a little closer. The Vikings would put the game out of reach for good in the top of the sixth by scoring three more runs and get to eleven runs on the game. The Bulldogs would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was a little too late and too big of a hole to dig out of.

On the afternoon, the Vikings tallied seventeen hits to break out of the slump. Collecting hits included: Brady Simonson with three, senior Zach Meyer with three, Rudi with two, sophomore Brett Schindler with two, sophomore Mitch Kiekhafer with two, Andrew Harmon, sophomore Nate Polden with two, and senior Tyler Dawson with two.

With the eleven runs the Vikings scored, eight players collected RBIs on the afternoon. Adding to their season total included: Simonson with two, Meyer with two, Rudi, Schindler, Kiekhafer, Polden with two, Christionson, and Dawson.

The Vikings will be looking to make it back to back wins on Thursday, May 5 as they take on the conference leading Durand Panthers.
