Elk Mound stays hot in perfect week

by Samuel Ripp

The Elk Mound baseball team had a perfect week as they went 3-0 to improve their overall record to 9-1. They started the week off in a big conference game against Colfax and downed them 13-0 on Monday, April 25 (see related story). They were back in action the next day at Black River Falls to take down the Tigers 3-1 on Tuesday. They finished the week in a narrow 1-0 victory against Spring Valley on Friday, April 29.

Black River Falls

The Elk Mound baseball team traveled to Black River Falls on Tuesday, April 26 in a non-conference game and came out with a win by a score of 3-1.

The Mounders were playing a Coulee Conference team for the second time this year and have now gone 2-0 against them. The Tigers however jumped out to an early one run lead in the bottom of the third inning, but that would be all the offense they could come up with. It took the Mounders a little longer to find their offense than it normally does in the game. They finally broke through in the third inning with a run to tie things up and then added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth to go up two for good.

It was a pitching and defensive kind of game for both teams as Elk Mound only collected four hits and they only gave up two hits on the afternoon. On the hill for the Mounders was junior Trey Mohr who picked up the win. Mohr went five innings only giving up one hit and one run on the afternoon and striking out seven Tigers. Sophomore Ethan Kjellberg came in for two innings of relief pitching and only surrendered one hit.

With Elk Mound only finding four hits on the afternoon, that went to only two batters. Senior Alex Hollister picked up two hits along with teammate Ethan Kjellberg adding to his hit total with two.

Picking up the RBIs on the afternoon were senior Brandon Bohl with a sac fly, Ethan Kjellberg, and junior Carter Pritchard.

Elk Mound will look to gain some ground on conference leader Durand as the season moves forward. Elk Mound sits one game behind with their only conference loss at the hands of Durand. The two teams will meet again on Monday, May 9 at Elk Mound for a rematch.

Spring Valley

The Elk Mound baseball traveled to Spring Valley on Friday, April 29 to take down the Cardinals by a score of 1-0.

In a game that only had one run, it was a defensive game all around. There were only five total hits in the game with two coming from Elk Mound and three for the Cardinals.

It took all seven innings until the scoreless tie was broken up by the Mounders as they scored in the top half of the inning and shut Spring Valley out in the bottom to take the victory.

On the mound for Elk Mound was senior Brandon Bohl who had a sensational day for the Mounders. He threw a complete game shutout while only allowing three hits and one walk on the afternoon. He also added thirteen strikeouts to help his team to the low scoring victory.

As for the offense, they were held in check and struggled at the plate. They only managed two hits, but took six walks on the afternoon.

Collecting the two hits for the Mounders were junior Trey Mohr and sophomore Ethan Kjellberg. Junior Carter Pritchard ended up being the hero as he drove home the only run of the game in the seventh inning, scoring teammate junior Hunter Adleman.

Elk Mound now improves to an overall record of 9-1 and 4-1 in the conference only being one game behind Durand for first.

Elk Mound will be looking to extend their four-game winning streak as they take on Plum City, Boyceville and Bloomer this next week. The Mounders will look for revenge when Durand comes to town on Monday, May 9.
