Elk Mound’s Jonah Bauer sets pair of records at UW-Stout Indoor meets
MENOMONIE — The track and field season has barely begun but Elk Mound’s Jonah Bauer already appears to be in mid-season form.
The senior, who finished fifth in both the Division 2, 100 and 200 meter state finals last year, had a pair of record-setting performances during two indoor meets held in UW-Stout’s Johnson Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 19 and Tuesday, March 22.
Bauer put his name in the record books in the season opening Northern Badger Classic on March 19 in winning both the 100 and 200 meter races that day.
Bauer ran a :06.59 in the 55 meter finals to establish a new mark besting his own record of 6.61 seconds set back in the 2014 Northern Badger Classic.
A little while later, Bauer tied the seven-year old record of Arcadia’s Issac Vazquez when he won the 200 meter race in :23.46.
Just three days later inside the Johnson Fieldhouse once again, Bauer came tantalizingly close to a third record when he again won the 55 meter race in a time of :06.59 at the Blue Devil Open (March 22) that featured several Division one and two schools. The time was just two one-hundredths off the record pace of :06.57 set by Tomah’s Matt Ferry in 2010. He also finished second in that meet’s 200 meter sprint.
Bauer’s efforts, which also included a fifth place in the Northern Badger’s long jump event, helped the Mounder boys finish third with 42.50 points at the Northern Badger Classic and ninth at the Blue Devil Open with 27.50 points.
Junior Elizabeth Fasbender was also a winner in the Northern Badger Classic for the Elk Mound girls. Fasbender ran a 5:52 to place first in the 1,600 meter run.
The Lady Mounders copped ninth at the Northern Badger Classic and 17th at the Blue Devil Open.
The Mounders had several other place winners at the two UW-Stout indoor meets.
Sophomore Jake Johnson took fourth in the 55 meter hurdles in the Northern Badger Classic March 19 and then cut a tenth of a second off his time in the same event at the Blue Devil Open three days later to finish third.
Also at last Tuesday’s Blue Devil Open, Nathan Kruger, a senior, placed sixth in the 3,200 meter run while junior Kaitlyn Baier finished in a three-way tie for fourth after clearing seven feet in the girls’ pole vault.
A few days prior at the Northern Badger Classic, junior Chandler Schreiber scored a fourth place finish in the boys’ pole vault with a jump of 11 feet. Fifth place finishes went to Freshman Alana Plaszcz in the 800 meter run, sophomore Maddie Jenson in the high jump and senior Taylor Deling in the shot put. Brooke Plaszcz, twin sister to Alana, finished sixth in the 1,600 meter run as did the boys’ 4 x 400 meter relay squad.
Complete results for the Elk Mound athletes for both meets are listed below.
