Elk Mound boys win Dunn-St. Croix championship for third time in four years

After winning a non-conference game at home 81-54 over Chetek-Weyerheauser Feb. 22, the Elk Mound boys went to Plum City three days later with the intent of bringing home a conference championship.

Having already clinched a share of the title with a win over Spring Valley last week, the Mounders were one game ahead of Durand and simply needed to win against  Elmwood-Plum City to claim it outright. They did just that, whipping the Wolves in rather convincing fashion 75-57, giving them a final conference record of 12-2 while Durand, with their win over Spring Valley finished 11-3. It is the third conference title for the Mounders in the last four years.

Elk Mound will now begin regional play at Mauston this Friday night.

Making three point shots — and lots of them–has been the name of the game for the Mounders as of late. The game against the Bulldogs was no exception as they knocked down 10 of them, six by Brandon Bohl in the lopsided win. Bohl hit four of them in the first half, Dane Lew hit the trifecta with a pair of triples, deuces and free throws for 12 points, Cole Tyman canned a trey, two close range shots and a free toss for eight points, Ben Lambele dropped in three buckets, Justin Erpenbach and Alex Hollister each scored in the paint and Colin Svee added a free throw to allow the Mounders to hold a 43-27 halftime advantage.

Elk Mound canned 11 of 13 free tosses in the second half and with two more Bohl triples and one by Tyman, it was more than enough to finish off the big win. Svee came up with three deuces and was 4 for 4 from the charity stripe in the half  and Lew was 3 for 3 to help the cause.

Bohl ended his night with 18 points, Lew added 15, while Svee and Tyman both had 11. The Mounders were 15 for 20 from the foul line while the Bulldogs were 1 for 5.

The Wolves were the defending  co-conference champions but after losing a ton of players from graduation, they were 9-12 overall and 7-6 in conference play when they greeted the Mounders The long ball continued to be the mainstay of the Elk Mound offense with four players combining to knock down 14 triples in the contest. This time it was Lambele who led in the long range department with four treys to account for 12 of his team leading 20 points.

Lew drained a trio of triples in the first half to go with eight points by Lambele, seven from Svee, five by Tyman, a trey from Bohl and a deuce apiece by Chandler Schreiber and Erpenbach as the Mounders held a 38-24 halftime lead.

Lambele led the second half scoring with 10 points while Tyman’s pair of triples helped the Mounders up their lead to 20 points which stayed around that spread the rest of the contest.

“We had the tempo in our favor most of the night,” coach Chris Hahn said. “We moved the ball very well the second half but we had too many turnovers and need to take care of the ball better. I am proud of how our kids found a way to win all season and for winning the conference championship outright,” he added.
