Mounder boys bruise Beavers, trip up Toppers

Playing a pair of teams with a combined six wins on the season was just what the doctor ordered for the Elk Mound boys last week. Coming off a disappointing loss to Spring Valley, the Mounders played a Monday night make up game at home against the Augusta Beavers Jan. 25 and put the game away early with a 73-37 win, then three days later Elk Mound did not treat the visiting Glenwood City boys very well either when they trounced them 76-30. The wins put the Mounders record at 10-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Augusta

The Beavers were 5-8 overall but they were no match for the Mounders who made 10 three pointers in the game including six in the first half to help them take a 42-17 lead. With Ben Lambele pounding the paint for 12 of his game high 19 points by scoring on five buckets and a pair of free throws, Brandon Bohl hitting from all over on three treys and a couple of deuces, Cole Tyman draining a pair of treys, Ryan Mohr adding a triple and a close range basket, Colin Svee adding five points on a deuce and three free tosses and Alex Hollister knocking down a free throw, the game was well in hand by the time Mohr added two more triples, a deuce and a free toss in the second half to finish with a career high 14 points and Carter Pritchard came up with all nine of his points when he scored from all over the court with a shot from behind the arc, two from the paint and one at the charity stripe to help the Mounders maintain their large lead.

“We rotated well and moved the ball well on offense which allowed us to take great shots from the field,” Mounder coach Chris Hahn said. “Our pressure  defense led us to a lot of transition opportunities and forced Augusta to take challenging shots. Ben hit the defensive glass hard and Brandon shot well which is what we need to continue for us to keep winning games,” he added.

Glenwood City

The Hilltoppers have been struggling this year and started the evening with just one win which came against a non-conference opponent. With Elk Mound still missing Dane Lew and Chandler Schreiber, plenty of other players had a chance to display their talents which included six different Mounders hitting shots from behind the arc for a total of 13 for the contest.

Pritchard, Bohl, Tyman and Mohr all drained a pair of treys in the first half while Lambele scored on six shots in the paint and a free throw to go with a deuce from Svee to allow the Mounders to take a 39-14 lead heading into the locker room.

The basket must have been looking mighty big the second half as well with Mark Dickenson canning two triples along with one each from Jameson Rubenzer, Bohl and Tyman and the Mounders knocked down 8 of 12 free throws to seal the deal.

“Our pressure defense forced Glenwood into a lot of turnovers,” Hahn said. “Our team moved the ball well and took some great shots, too,” he added.

Lambele finished with 20 points and Tyman 13 for the game. The Mounders were 9 of 14 from the foul line while the Toppers were 3 for 7.
