Colfax Health & Rehab News – 5-7-2014

Spring Rain, umbrellas, green grass and cool weather is how we started the week. Inside we made the best of the situation.

On Monday morning residents enjoyed a warm breakfast of their choice. Many residents came to the Square to take part in devotions and exercise. Sue leads the group and uses scarfs during the exercise segment. While listening to beautiful music residents gracefully moved their arms to make the colorful scarfs flutter around the room. Exercise can be so much fun when you are indoors and with friends. The rain that kept us company all week was an inspiration for happiness in the afternoon. There is old saying “if you think sunshine brings you happiness, then you haven’t danced in the rain”. Residents, families and friends found their happiness in the Square. They danced “while” it rained as “Honey and Me” played their music. LeAnn came in to help residents. Don was the vocalist and Diane Schindler played the accordion. They will also be one of the entertainers who will perform on Thursday nights during Music in the Park. The 5:30 REX class was held as usual. Chairs lined the rotunda as residents gathered to play kick ball. Residents had an evening snack as the busy day came to a close. Everyone wanted a good night rest so they would have energy for the activities on Tuesday.

Kathy led the devotions, current events and exercise at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Veda, one of our volunteers was here to help. Our volunteers are amazing and much appreciated by everyone! The REX class was at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m. the Square was transformed into a Bingo Hall. Happy Hour was at 3 p.m. immediately following Bingo. We served coffee, cookies, chips, mixed drinks and wine. Strawberry wine was the favorite that day.

On Wednesday morning Pastor Schoenknecht from Holden, Norton, and North Running Valley Lutheran Churches led the worship service. Delores Huber was our pianist. The Monthly Resident Council Meeting was held in the Square. This month Lois Hayes read a beautiful poem and Laurie Craft was the guest speaker. Laurie is our social worker.  She makes sure residents know their rights. She always has an open door policy if anyone needs to talk to her privately. Laurie is going to also do a “Show or tell” in the fall. It will be about her Alaska fishing trip.

On Thursday morning is Volleyball time. Residents sit in lines and a large soft rubbery ball is volleyed. Using our hands, heads, and feet make for a fun game and great exercise to boot! Taek came from Menomonie to do her magic and manicures. She is such a cheerful sole! In the afternoon the Square was ready for the residents to help make dog bone. They rolled and cut the dough into doggy bone shapes. We use bacon grease, oatmeal, wheat flour, corn meal and eggs. While the bones baked residents socialized over coffee and fresh baked bars (not the dog bones). We sell the dog bones in packages of 12 @ $1.00. They have no preservatives and should be stored in the refrigerator. The proceeds are used for activity programs.

On Friday morning Kathy Mitchell floated in the front door and said “What’s that phenomenon up in the sky?” Glen Edberg, who had come for the gospel sing, said HE had brought the “sprinkle of sunshine”. He was so generous to share that with us! He also shared his voice while Delores played the piano and Julie played the flute! Loretta led the rosary for the Catholic residents in the East Family dining lounge. The afternoon Dime Bingo was in full swing at 2 p.m. Residents like a little jingle in their pockets. The Wii game got a lot of activity after bingo. We are putting another Wii game in the West dining room lounge so even more residents can participate.

On Saturday the afternoon Hollywood game was a success as residents took chocolate treats back to their rooms.

That is just some of news from beautiful downtown Colfax where even with grey sky the men are hunting turkeys and the women are hunting for good buys at the malls.
