Elk Mound baseball team rolls over Raiders, tramples Toppers

Starting their week off with a 14-1 rout over the Elmwood Raiders on  Monday, April 21, the Elk Mound baseball team added an 11-0 win over Glenwood City just 24 hours later. (A third game scheduled for Thursday against Mondovi was cancelled due to rain.) After losing their first two games of the season, the Mounders have now won three in a row for a 3-2 record.

Elmwood

The Mounders led 3-0 after two innings then the bats were silenced for a while until they poured on seven runs to break the game open in the fifth. Elmwood came up with a run in the bottom  of the inning to avoid ending the game in five innings but four more Mounder runs in the sixth ended things an inning early due to the 10 run rule.

Brandon Bohl whiffed 15 Elmwood batters while giving up two hits with one walk to earn the win. Zach Mohr, Cole Tyman and Dane Lew all smacked a pair of hits with two of Lew’s being doubles as he brought in four runs. Tyman also rapped a pair of doubles for four RBIs and Mohr crossed home plate three times.

Glenwood City

Folks around the area may be wondering how in the heck the Mounders keep finding solid pitching as Ryan Conlin saw his first action on the mound this year and threw a five inning, no-hitter with six strikeouts against the Hilltoppers. Elk Mound had only three hits in the game but used 10 walks given up by Glenwood pitchers in the first two innings to score all their runs with six in the first and five in the second. Jon Storing, Marcus Klug and Hunter Kohls all had one hit with Klug bringing in a pair of runs while Trey Mohr, Zach Mohr, Bohl and Tyman all scored twice.

“We are a young team and took our lumps early on, but we have a talented bunch of young kids,” Elk Mound coach Paul Andrea said after the two wins. “Our cupboard is not bare.”
