Colfax Health and Rehab News – 3-5-2014

When this Messenger is published there will be 16 days until the calendar proclaims that spring will officially arrive. I think someone forgot to inform the weather men. Residents have been staying warm and active. Leona Ubbelohde warms everyone’s hearts when she visits. Families and friends visiting their loved ones are one of the highlights of our residents’ days. Our staff is happy to make your visit pleasant.  We have refreshments available in all of our five kitchens.

Last Saturday many people from the community joined our residents in the Square to listen to the “North of Dixie” Concert. There was around 80 foot stomping folks who enjoyed the blue grass music. Technically that would have been 160 feet stomping.

Sunday was a little more peaceful. It was a good day to rest up for the exciting week ahead.

Monday morning residents enjoyed devotion, current events, followed by stretching and exercise. After lunch we were wonderfully entertained by “Honey and Me”. This musical performance consists of Don Schindler on vocals and Diane Schindler and her accordion. Diane makes her accordion sound like an entire band by using electrical equipment for additional sounds. The residents LOVED It! They will be playing again on April 28th. LeAnn and one of her friends helped the residents find their way to and fro.

On Tuesday afternoon the Square was turned into a bingo hall. Prize bags were filled by 3 p.m. Refreshments including fresh strawberry shortcake cookies was served. Happy Hour started at 3:30 and drinks and potato chips were served. “Let the chips fall where they may” has a new meaning at Happy Hour

On Wednesday morning we had our regular Church Service. This week Pastor Taylor from Otter Creek Christian Fellowship Church led the service. Delores Huber was our pianist. Linnea and Veda were here again to help as they had been many times during the week. As the minister, pianist and residents left the Square the activity staff transformed the Square into a French café. Each table had the menu displayed in a little stand announcing the “That’s Amore’ Meal” which would be served at 12:00. Bundles of pink roses, water goblets, and wine glasses greeted the residents. The kitchen was busy putting the finishing touches on the Chicken Cordon Blue, Au Gratin Potatoes, and Roasted Asparagus. The guests sipped on wine and listened to a French Strolling Violin player as they waited to be served. Fine food, beautiful music and friends were an unexpected treat for our residents. It was planned to help break up the long lingering winter. The music was Tom Utphall’s contribution. Tom is one of the band members of the “North of Dixie” band. Tom suggested his services as a French Café Strolling Musician. We couldn’t resist the atmosphere enhancement. The Beauty Boutique in the afternoon was busy as always. There is something about a beauty shop and the conversations while getting beautified that keeps the ladies entertained.

On Thursday after a good breakfast, residents came to the Square to play volleyball. We no longer keep score since we gave up on any rules. Just have fun is our motto.

On Friday morning Glen and Julie led the Gospel Sing and Delores played the piano. Loretta led the Rosary for the Catholic residents. The Dime Bingo players played away the afternoon as the new snow fell outside.

That is some of the news here in the beautiful land of Colfax where men are manly men and the women are gentile ladies, and everyone is getting very tired of winter!
