BOYCEVILLE — After sweeping Glenwood City three days earlier, the Boyceville girls’ basketball team looked to do the same when Spring Valley came to the Dog House last Thursday, February 20 for the final conference and regular-season game.
But, Boyceville would need to do so without starting freshman guard Blake Jeske who suffered a broken finger during practice and was lost for the reminder of the season.
“We discussed how others would have to step it up and that there were now new opportunities for others,” said Boyceville head coach Jay Lagerstrom.
“And the girls did just that,” he added.
Behind a quartet of double-digit scorers and a huge offensive effort in the second half, Boyceville earned a sweep of Spring Valley with a 68-44 win.
The Bulldogs clung to a slim four-point advantage, 30-26, at halftime, but exploded for 38 second-half points while holding the Cardinals to 18.
With that second straight conference win, Boyceville finished fifth in the Dunn-St. Croix’s final standings with a 6-8 mark.
Aubrey Malean led all scorers with 20 points and added six steals and four rebounds and four assists. Ellie Engeman finished with 17 points which included two three pointers. Brooklyn Talmage scored 13 points, had five rebounds and five assists and five steals. Chelsi Holden chipped in for 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Emma Harvey tallied eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs and finished with five points.
“The girls really got a lot of defensive pressure on Spring Valley. Emma Harvey and Zoey Hellendrung played great post defense, and as a team, we did a great job on the boards,” Lagerstrom said.
Boyceville also finished with 22 steals in the game. The Bulldogs made five threes and were 11-for-20 at the free throw line.
Jada Hoolihan and Kate Matthys led the Cardinals with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Spring Valley made eight three pointers, six of which came in the first half, but shot just nine free throws and made only four.
Boyceville, 11-12 overall and the eighth seed, hosted Grantsburg (#9) in the opening round of the WIAA Division 4 regional last evening (Tuesday, Feb. 25). The winner will travel to Shell Lake this Friday, February 28 to battle the top-seeded Lakers.
