SHELL LAKE — Whether it was the long drive or a lack of routine due to the week-long Thanksgiving break, the Boyceville girls fell behind early against Shell Lake last Tuesday, November 26 for a non-conference basketball contest.
Despite getting to within six points of the host Lakers, the cold-shooting Bulldogs were unable to fully close the gap and lost 63-53.
“We had to play catch up the whole game,” stated Boyceville head coach Jay Lagerstrom
“Just couldn’t hit some shots when we had good looks and shot poorly from the line, we need to be better converting them,” he added.
Boyceville made just seven of its 16 foul shots in the game.
Lagerstrom said that Shell Lake has a lot of size and that his squad struggled in the paint especially early in the game.
That’s maybe why the Bulldogs found the three-point arc so enticing. Freshman Brooklyn Talmage nailed a team-leading four triples in the game including three in the opening half and finished with a game-high 23 points. Sophomore Aubrey Malean had the Bulldogs’ other two treys, both in the second half, and finished with nine points. Freshman Blake Jeske sank five two-point hoops, but was just 1-for-5 at the charity stripe to finish with 11 points.
Talmage scored 14 of her points in the first half with Jeske chipping in for six and Zoey Hellendrung for five to help the Bulldogs tally 29 points by halftime. The Lakers, however, had put up 36 points to lead by seven at the intermission.
While the Bulldogs did get to within a half dozen points, the Lakers never relinquished their advantage as it out scored their visitors 27-24 in the final stanza for the ten-point victory.
Hellendrung and Talmage finished with seven rebounds each, Malean and Jeske grabbed five apiece, and Ellie Engeman had four to account for the majority of the Bulldogs’ 32 boards.
Shell Lake had a trio of players score in double figures in its home win. Athena Lehman led the Lakers with 17, Sara Brunburg made four of the Lakers five three pointers to finish with 16 points, and Shaylee Anderson tallied 11 points. The Lakers also struggled at the free throw line making just four of their 16 attempts.
“They have a nice team,” complimented Lagerstrom of Shell Lake. “I feel they will win a lot of games this year. We battled with them and need to keep working to be better each day.”
The Bulldogs (1-1) will have plenty of opportunities to improve this week alone as it plays in three games, all on the road. Boyceville headed back up north last evening (Tuesday, December 3) to play in Webster. Boyceville will then travel to Colfax twice in three days, including Thursday’s conference opener versus the Vikings and to participate in the Northwest Classic. A tournament which pits Dunn-St. Croix schools against those from the Cloverbelt, on Saturday with an early morning (8:30 a.m.) clash against Osseo-Fairchild. Next Tuesday, December 10, Boyceville hosts the two-time defending D-SC champs from Elk Mound.
